| Dave Whelan & Mike Di Scala |
Society Nightclub DJ's since 2003, Dave Whelan and Mike Di Scala had met each other in the Liverpool record shop 3 Beat Records as they both bought vinyl there at the time. They got chatting about music, had very similar
tastes, and eventually started to go see each other playing at their local
nightclubs as DJs. From there they got together a makeshift studio and started putting down very under- produced basic ideas. They began as 'The Chosen Few', Les Calvert joining them, with the trio producing house music and they founded the Adhesive record label (a subsidiary of All Around the World) in 2004, releasing a cover version of the 'Tears For Fears' song 'Everybody Wants To Rule The World' also in 2004.
Mike had been producing 'scouse house' and commercial dance since 2001 when he started his own record label, BCD Records, with his studio
partners Lee Butler and Les Calvert. They produced and released many 'scouse house' records and bootlegs on this
label using many different aliases such as 'Rezonance Q', 'BCD Project' and 'Ultrabeat' etc. He then began producing more funky house and electro styles of dance with Dave Whelan, using aliases such as 'Adhesive', 'The Chosen Few' and 'Whelan & Di Scala'. As a duo, Dave and Mike also released several remixes under various names such as 'The Bassline Hustlers', 'Men from Mars' and 'Da Mode'.
In 2010, Mike and Dave began a side project called 'Camelphat' and released their first recordings on their own label Vice Records initially wearing wrestling masks to conceal their identity because they "just wanted the people to judge the music and not us". In 2011, the two avid Evertonian's, Dave Whelan and Mike Di Scala, became owners of a Liverpool nightclub Mansion.
'CamelPhat' would be Whelan & Di Scala's side project for some time until 2014 when Spinnin Records signed their track 'The Act' to their Spinnin Deep sub-label. 'CamelPhat' then became the duo's main project and the 'Whelan & DiScala' alias was essentially abandoned.
Together they produced & remixed some of the biggest dance tracks to date and were voted No.1 Production team in Liverpool (Home of Cream) by the Liverpool Echo Clubbing Editor and 2015 saw them playing Creamfields festival for the first time.
They released numerous singles and EPs on various record labels with some 'CamelPhat' songs appearing on the Ultratop charts in Belgium, such as 'The Act', 'Paradigm', 'Constellations', 'Make 'Em Dance' and 'Hangin' Out with Charlie'.
The duo's collaboration with 'Elderbrook' on 'Cola' in 2017 was an international hit single which peaked at No.1 on the US Billboard Dance Club Songs chart and was nominated for Best Dance Recording at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards. Since its release in June 2017 it has become undoubtedly the biggest and most addictive record of the summer, dominating in Ibiza, becoming a defining musical moment of the year. The track occupied the UK chart for over 20 weeks with over 50+ million streams on Spotify alone
They released further singles and EPs and had other hit singles with 'Panic Room', a collaboration with 'Au/Ra and 'Breathe', a collaboration with Cristoph featuring Jem Cooke. In December 2018 they signed to RCA Records and in June 2019 they released 'Be Someone', a collaboration with Jake Bugg, as the lead single from their upcoming debut album. That year also saw these major Liverpool DJs make their headline performance at Creamfields as well as their huge homecoming gig at Bramley Moore Dock in November.
Mike has also launched a successful career as a hardcore DJ and producer, using the alias of 'Re-Con'. As 'Re-Co he has worked with some of the other big names in hardcore and dance music, such as Darren Styles, Hixxy, Mark Breeze, Alex K and Squad-E.
