Pool Of Sound - 28 Costumes

28 Costumes

'28 Costumes', also known as 'The Cossies', began in Liverpool back in 2003 when Chris McIntosh was introduced to Tony Reilly by a mutual friend and after that they formed an intense friendship, writing songs together. They eventually put together a band consisting of Chris on vocals and guitar, Tony on guitar and backing vocals, Paul Green on bass guitar and backing vocals and drummer Liam Keightly who was soon replaced by Nick Hoare. They played a gig in May 2003 at The Pilgrim, Liverpool and soon afterwards signed with the local record label Spank Records who put out their debut album, 'The Fake Death Experience'.

The album, released in Nov 2004, gathered a huge amount of praise from the music press...from the NME and Artrocker magazines to The Independant and Daily Star. The album was hailed as many things such as "...fun, serious and totally genius" and with The Fly magazine saying "Truly, this is a work of rare genius 5/5". Two months after the album's release the band went to Wales for a month to record a follow up album with the same producer, Rob Whiteley. With the album finished, the band left Spank Records before its release and drummer Nick Hoare also left the band around the same time for family reasons and was replaced by Ally McPhie.
In 2006 the band went to Germany and toured as the support band for the wildly successful German band 'MIA' and ended up living in a bunker in Berlin for a month. It was a testing time for the band and inevitably there were clashes. They then went to the South By South West music fest in Austin, Texas in 2007 and played several shows, including joining Wayne Coyne of 'The Flaming Lips' on-stage for a performance that was filmed for the Jay Leno Show. On the last night, bass player Paul Green went missing in Austin, only to turn up in the early hours of the morning...the tensions inside the band had grown pretty big by this point and as a result Paul had left the band by the time the plane had landed back in the U.K.
Electric Fever EP

Paul was temporarily replaced by Paul Williams and with this line up they recorded the EP, 'Electrical Fever', which was released through Invicta Hi-Fi Records and the band toured throughout the U.K. and Europe. Paul Williams was then replaced by Joanne Bodie, with a debut Glastonbury appearance following in 2008. The follow up to 'The Fake Death Experience' had still not been released so Andy Donovan, who was in the band 'Elle S'Appelle,' was drafted in to re-record a second album at the band's Liverpool base, 'The Punch Tank' - an almost derelict disused Rice Warehouse near the docks. Midway through recording, Andy was playing in some live shows with them and was now a staple member of the band, cementing his place during the tour of Ireland with 'The Futureheads' in the winter of 2008.
Yet, like so many bands before them, things went awry, and the band splintered when in the summer of 2009, they took some time off after working constantly for a number of years and clocking up over 70,000 miles in the van. Chris and Tony both focused then on different projects and lead singer and driving force Chris moved to Berlin, whilst drummer Ally moved away from Liverpool to pursue his ambition of becoming the next 'David Dickinson'.
In April 2010, there was a farewell concert held at Le Bateau, Liverpool, in which the original line-up of the band re-united. They had two albums recorded and finished but yet to be released. The first 'Adventure Stories' was recorded shortly after the release of their debut album and the second 'This Band Has Eaten All Our Money' was recorded in the summer of 2008.
