| The Little Flames |
Another decent indie band 'The Little Flames' was formed in Hoylake, Wirral in 2004 after Eva Peterson and Mat Gregory were introduced to each other by dub/punk DJ Babylon Fox. With a good ear for a tune, they also had in Eva Peterson an excellent not-so-secret weapon, a neo-60s pop-soul belter out front, who The Guradian described as, "just like Dusty Springfield or Sandie Shaw fronting a band such as 'The Pixies', she prances about like a 'druid at Summer Solstice', tambourine in hand, lost in music." Eva is joined by Mat Gregory, the main songwriter, on guitar, Greg Mighall on drums, Joe Edwards on bass guitar and Miles Kane on guitar.
Their music obviously had 1960s inspiration and were slightly similar to 'The Coral'. They had apparently written their debut single, 'Goodbye Little Rose', just 18 hours after meeting.Their second single 'Put Your Dukes Up, John' was covered by 'Arctic Monkeys' on the 'B' side of their single 'Leave Before the Lights Come On'. In fact, the 'Arctic Monkeys' were fans of the band and wore 'Little Flames' T-shirts at their Astoria gig in London, as the two bands toured together on the Sheffield band’s first two album tours.'The Little Flames' also supported local heroes 'The Coral' 'The Zutons' and 'The Dead 60s'.
Signed to legendary indie label Deltasonic, the band toured extensively during their first years when they also released their singles. Their sound continued to evolve as they absorbed and reformulated an array of influences, ranging from krautrock, Motown and 60s garage, to film music and the symphonic pop of artists like Serge Gainsbourg and Françoise Hardy.
In the sessions leading up to the recording of their debut album, working with producer Central Nervous System (AKA Joe Fearon), the band's early spiky sound gave way to something altogether darker and more expansive.
The album, 'The Day is Not Today', was eventually recorded with producer Tore Johansson, using Sweden's famous Tambourine studios and Gula Studion in Malmö. It showcased the evolution of the band's music, where the energy and impatience of their earlier twisted guitar pop was not only fully honed ('Seven Days, If Tomorrow Never Comes'), but juxtaposed with a sound that was both ethereal and cinematic ('October Skies, The Girl of Last Year'). The album was mixed, mastered and ready to go in 2007, but before it could be released the band decided to split up. A spokesperson for the band's record label Deltasonic Records made this statement, "We are sorry to have to announce that 'The Little Flames' have split up. It is an amicable split, and they will continue to work on their own projects in the very near future." Eva Petersen said, " It may have seemed an abrupt split, but it wasn't to us. We had all been pulling towards different ways musically for a while. There was never any animosity. We had a really good laugh together and it fizzled out naturally like a relationship does. We're still mates."
Miles, Joe and Greg initially formed 'The Rascals', with Miles Kane then going on to form 'The Last Shadow Puppets' with Alex Turner and also recording solo material. Mat and Eva have continued to work separately on various music and art projects.
Although the album, 'The Day Is Not Today', was not released, in 2016, as part of the re-launch of Deltasonic and reissue series, the decision was taken to finally release the album that was originally recorded in 2006.
