A History Of Liverpool Thespians - Darci Shaw

Darci Louise Shaw was born on the 17th of April 2002 to Peter and Louise Shaw in Mossley Hill, Liverpool. She attended The Belvedere Academy and had taken Saturday acting classes at the Liverpool  Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) from the age of 5 and then joined the Everyman and Playhouse Youth Theatre at the age of 14, participating weekly and appearing in the company's 'Fiddler on the Roof' (2017) and Romeo and Juliet (2017). For her TV debut, Darci appeared in numerous episodes across Series 1 of ITV crime drama 'The Bay' (2019) as Holly Meredith airing to screens in March 2019, and later the same year, made her feature film professional acting debut when only 15 years old, and won broadsheet praise, for her portrayal of a young Judy Garland in the 2019 biopic 'Judy', which saw her star alongside Renée Zellweger. She plays Judy Garland at the time she was cast as a child actor in 'The Wizard of Oz', the part that made her famous, and is scattered throughout the film in flashback scenes from Judy Garland's childhood. It's not a glorified walk-on role and she does proper acting and dancing. Director Rupert Goold said, "I saw this tape, this girl with a really strong Liverpool accent, very sweet, very self-conscious almost, and the moment her mum started recording her on her phone, she just had this incredible old-fashioned acting quality and I couldn't believe it. Often you're worried about a young performer, but she was just incredible - so real and so honest. I have a real hunch about her - I think she's got something really magical. I think we'll hear a lot more from her."

As Melissa, Jamie's wife, with whom she has recently had a baby boy named Alfie.

Following an appearance in the short 'Bitter Sky' (2017), a story about a young girl from Liverpool who lives in Wales with her step-father but wants to return to her mum in Liverpool, she did a Netflix show called 'The Irregulars' in 2021, a supernatural drama, which was set in Victorian London but was shot in Liverpool. Then, originally auditioning for another role in 'The Colour Room' (2021), and not hearing anything back for a while, she was invited to audition for Dot, the younger sister of Clarice Cliff, and got the role. It was particularly great as the film set was in Liverpool and is is based on the life of 1920s/30s ceramic artist Clarice Cliff. After an small appearance part in 'Brassic' (2022) and as Bea in the award winning short 'The Rising of the Sap' (2024), she played the young Cilla Black in 'Midas Man' 2024). The film, which chronicles the life of Beatles manager Brian Epstein, features Darci in a prominent role showcasing Cilla's early career in the 1960s and she was praised for her transformation into the iconic Liverpool legend. In 2025 she obtained a substantial role in the Liverpool gangland series 'This City Is Ours', where the Phelan family is on the cusp of a not-so-civil war over who should replace patriarch Ronnie (Sean Bean) when he retires. Here she plays the wife of Ronnie's son Jamie who is in a power battle with Michael Kavanagh, played by James Nelson-Joyce.

She returned to screens as Alice Diamond in the second season of 'A Thousand Blows' (2024-26) and plays an even bigger part in this instalment of the period drama as the character establishes herself as second in command in Mary Carr's Forty Elephants Gang. The series boasts a strong Scouse heartbeat, as Darci is part of a cast that also includes Stephen Graham and James Nelson-Joyce and Darci admits it was comforting to be reminded so much of home during filming. Creator, Steven Knight, heaped praise on her character in an interview with GQ saying, "Alice is, for me, the standout. She's in series one, but we're starting to follow her quite closely, because eventually, she's going to become something special."
