The Dispensary at 87 Renshaw Street is one of the oldest pubs in Liverpool, located on the corner of Renshaw Street and Oldham Street, and has a history dating back to 1857. Initially known as The Grapes when once a Tetley House, it then later adopted the name The Dispensary in 2018, when still part of the Cains Brewery chain. Its part of the Cains empire is evidenced through the branding on its exterior before it went independent after the demise of Cains, with many owners and guises in recent decades.
The Dispensary boasts a lovely exterior that showcases its rich past and its name pays tribute to its location, which was once near a dispensary providing medical care to the less fortunate. With its cream and dark green paint, large windows that let in plenty of natural light, and traditional signage that nods to its Cains Brewery roots, the building has that classic Victorian pub look that draws in both locals and tourists. Once you walk inside, you're welcomed by a cosy and inviting atmosphere with raised seating at the back. The split-level layout adds a nice touch, with the elegant wood panelling, the long old wooden bar running along one side, highlighting its age and authenticity. The space is filled with a mix of tables and chairs, creating a warm yet eclectic vibe. The walls are decorated with breweriana and Victorian memorabilia, adding to the pub’s distinctive charm. As you come in from the main door, you see the mosaic on the floor which is the old Grapes. It has a single room on two levels with some etched and stained glass windows, old enamel advertising signs and mirrors on the walls, and behind the bar you can still see the gold lettered sign from when it was called the Grapes. New owner Trevor O'Loughlin, born in Galway, Ireland, to a family of publicans and bar owners, is gradually turning it into an Irish pub and says, "Guinness is a big deal for us. I wouldn't be as brazen to say it's the best Guinness in Liverpool, but I happen to think it is." The new Dispensary team also wanted to make the most of the delicious food being made by their original pub 'Dockleaf, sited at Cain's Brewery Village, and have been putting out plenty of tasty homecooked pies with seasonal flavours. It has continued the fine tradition of serving a wide range of guest ales, alongside regular lagers and beers, bottled beers, and even a range of non-alcoholic beers (which would not have been allowed under the previous ownership). There is definitely a focus on quality drinks, quality service, and a feeling of community, which makes the 'Dizzy' stand out.
