A History of Liverpool Thespians - Shaun Mason

 

Shaun Mason was born in Edge Hill, Liverpool in 1985 and was a shy boy but always funny and good at doing voices. He was in school and joined the Young Everyman Playhouse (YEP) and that is where he found his real love for acting and graduated. His first screen role was as Hippolito in Frank Cottrell Boyce's drama 'Revengers Tragedy' (2002) alongside Chrisopher Eccleston and in the same year played the role of Tommo in 13 episodes of 'Brookside' (2002-03). TV movies followed with 'I'm a Juvenile Delinquent, Jail Me!' (2004), 'Death Defying Acts' (2007), 'The Crew' (2008), 'Don't Worry About Me' (2009), and then minor TV roles in 'Accused' (2010) and Jimmy McGovern's 'Moving On' series, 'The Milkman' (2011). The year 2012 was a busy year with Shaun appearing in  'Shameless', 'Scott & Bailey', 'Line of Duty' and in 4 episodes of 'Good Cop' before returning to the big screen in the film 'Kelly + Victor'. Back to TV, and the series 'Luther' (2017) was followed by him playing Trevor in 'Cilla' (2014), portrayed by Sheridan Smith, and then Seth Bishop in 'The Frankenstein Chronicles' (2015). 

Appearing in 'Snatch'

Another very busy year came in 2017 which saw him in multiple productions, 'Snatch', 'Little Boy Blue', 'Tommies', 'Hidden America with Johnah Ray', 'Rellik', 'The League of Gentlemen' and 'Trollied'. Next came a return to a 'Soap' as he was in 3 episodes of 'Coronation Street' (2018), playing Scott, a thuggish bouncer at Tassels lap-dancing club and then in 'Vera' (2018). 'Doctor Who' and 'I Hate Suzie' in 2020 was followed, in 2021, by 'A Discovery of Witches' and 'Time', which led to more exposure on the small screen. A role as a Priest in 'Becoming Elizabeth' (2022) and the Short film 'The Stupid Boy' (2022) led to 3 episodes of 'Dodger' (2022), 2 episodes of the highly acclaimed TV series 'The Responder' (2024), 'The Gathering' (2024) and 'Blitz' (2024). Films 'Hamnet' and Fackham Hall were next in 2025 before finally 4 episodes in the TV series 'Steal (2025).

In 'The Legend of Ned Ludd'

Besides being in demand on screen, Shaun has maintained his stage work and his other theatre credits include productions of 'Your Breath in the Air', 'Pals', 'Of Mice and Men', 'King of Edge Hill', 'God's Gift', 'The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists', 'Stags and Hens'. A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Council Depot Blues at the Liverpool Royal Court, 'The Legend of Ned Ludd', Macbeth and 'Billy Wonderful' at Liverpool Everyman, 'The Salon', 'Blackberry Troutface', 'Cinderella', 'When I Wake Up I Want to be Famous', 'Night Collar', 'A Clockwork Orange' at the Citizens Theatre,' Snow White', 'Sink or Swim', 'Peter Pan', 'Feed the Beast' at the Birmingham Rep/New Wolsey Theatre, 'All's Well That Ends Well' at the Shakespeare’s Globe, 'This Bitter Earth', 'Oliver Twist' at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' at the Sheffield Theatres, 'Black Lives Black Words' at the Bush Theatre, 'Stop and Search' and 'Hey Bunny Get Loose'.  

The BBC has announced a new drama 'The Cage', written and created by BAFTA nominated Tony Schumacher ('The Responder') and starring Bafta award-winner Sheridan Smith ('Cilla' and 'Mrs Biggs'). The high-stakes, high energy crime story set within the world of a Liverpool Casino has two unforgettable characters at its heart. When Leanne (Sheridan Smith) and Matty (Michael Socha) discover they are both robbing from the safe at the inner-city casino they work in, their lives are set on a collision course; with each other, the local gangster they're stealing from, and the police.Shaun has been cast in the 5 part series along with other local actors, Barry Sloane, Anton Bibby, Sophie Mensah, Abby Mavers, Louis Emerick, Katy Carmichael, Dave Hart, Eileen O'Brien, Eithne Browne and Sue Jenkins. It will appear on our screens in early 2026.
