Pool Of Sound - The Lags

As long ago as 2016 their EP was reviewed by Liverpool Noise: "Drawing inspiration from the likes of indie gods 'Oasis', 'The Stone Roses' and 'Arctic Monkeys', Lags’ songs make for easy listening on a roadtrip or when you’re stuck in the house on a rainy day. The Kirkby lads – Danny, Liam, Anthony and Brad – have recently released three tracks on their debut EP, with more expected on the way. Opening track 'Feeling Alright' is a catchy number, showcasing the band’s youth. The lyrics really sum up the battle of every young person to be carefree with the singer intoning,  'I’m waiting for my time to set me free to be who I wanna be'. Alongside the jangling instrumentals, the song will clearly resonate with the general feeling of young people today. The second song, 'The Fox / The World’s Coming To Me', takes a slightly different tone. The singer’s pared back vocals and the switch in progression of instrumentals make this song have a storytelling quality. It is the solo instrumental moments that really impress though – if this track is anything to go by the band are willing to experiment, making the prospect of future releases all the more exciting. Closing the EP with 'Tryna Find Your Name (About You)', the lads capture the emotions of every love-struck youngster. The introduction of brass instrumentals towards the end gives the song a jazz quality, adding yet another string to the talented band’s bow."

'The Lags' have been a staple of the British rock scene for many years now and are known for their electrifying live performances and a sound that seamlessly blends rock, pop, and psychedelia. This four-piece band continues to capture the spirit of classic rock 'n' roll with a modern twist and their music keeps fans hooked with their intricate instrumental arrangements and catchy vocal hooks. The band currently comprises of Dan (lead vocals), Bradley (drums), Jack (bass) and Liam (lead guitar). Liam and Dan are school friends who originally started the band with a different bass player Anthony, and Dan and Bradley know each other from playing football. José (The Heavy North guitarist José Ibanez), has been their producer on all of their tracks to date.

Dan and Liam have similar musical tastes: Dan says, " 'Oasis' got me into music but then 'The Stone Roses', 'The Beatles', 60s local stuff, it’s all guitar music." Liam cites bands such as 'Linkin Park', 'The Stone Roses' guitarist John Squire and 'The Seahorses' (also formed by Squire). Jack calls his influences a mixed bag: " 'Arctic Monkeys', rap music and 'Arcade Fire'.’  Bradley brings the blues to the band; " 'The Rolling Stones', 60’s British rock. I love 'The Who' and the British take on blues rock. I love Mitch Mitchell (a drummer for Jimi Hendrix)."

Their band name has an entertaining provenance: "We were in a taxi when a police car drove past and the taxi driver said that’s what we should call the band. "LAGS", it’s an Aussie word for 'convict',’ Dan said. Bradley laughs: "We were a bit worried that it sounded too much like another local band – The La’s!"

'The Lags' released their fourth single 'Get A Grip' early in 2023, a follow on from their incredibly catchy, guitar-driven single ‘The Locker’ in 2022. There followed 'Hares On The Mountain' and 'Different Kind' in 2024 and in 2025, 'Ready To Go'. As they posted on social media, "Buzzing that our new single ‘Ready to Go’ will be out on all platforms this Friday, right before our show at @liverpoolsoundcity. We can’t wait for yous all to hear it."
