Hachim Mastour was born on the 15th of June 1998 in Reggio Emilia, Italy to Moroccan parents and from an early age football was his passion with his goal to become the best footballer in the world. He began playing at his hometown club AC Reggiana and in early 2012, at the age of 13, he featured for Inter Milan in youth tournaments despite rules prohibiting him from leaving Reggiana until his next birthday. Having gained notoriety on social media when posting videos of his skillset and freestyle ability, which showcased fantastic dribbling and quick feet, as well as having a good awareness of space, a great eye for a pass and being able to score. In January of that year, he scored five goals in the Ielasi Memorial tournament, including one in the final against A.S. Roma. Following approaches from several clubs including Juventus, FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester City he moved to Inter's city rivals AC Milan on the recommendation of former manager Arrigo Sacchi for a fee of €500,000 at the age of 14. He made mincemeat of his age group in his first season at Milan (2012/13), growing in fame due to more online footage on social media and even featured in a freestyle video with Neymar to show how much his stock and reputation had risen in the football world, but things really upped a notch when he finally played for Milan's U19s in 2013/14. Making his debut from the bench in a 1-0 defeat to Brescia on the 29th of March he played nine minutes at the age of 15 and his second and last outing of the season was an 11-minute outing on the 3rd of May against Atalanta.
He was then promoted into Milan's first team by manager Clarence Seedorf for the final match of the 2013/14 Serie A season and would have become the youngest Milan player to feature in the league but remained on the bench in the 2–1 win over Sassuolo at the San Siro on the 18th of May. The 2014/15 season followed a similar pattern with Hachim sitting on the bench for Milan's opening day victory over Lazio, but that would sadly be the best it got in Italy. After training with the senior squad, he would have hoped for regular playing time in the U19s, but he made only nine appearances due to injury problems. He played in only three games between September 2014 and January 2015, and then managed only two further appearances up until late-April due to knee surgery. His development unsurprisingly took a hit, resulting in him being left on the bench for a handful of first-team outings at Milan, so he was loaned out in a bid for more opportunities. In 2015, The Guardian had named him as one of the 50 best young players in the world.
It came as no surprise therefore that the 'wonderkid', having just turned 17, was given a two-year loan deal at Malaga CF, confirmed in the summer of 2015 at the exclusive request of club owner Abdullah al-Thani, but he would only make one appearance all season. As a minor, his transfer to another country had to be approved by FIFA, which was not completed until the 5th of November. He was first included in a matchday squad for the home fixture against Real Betis making his competitive club debut in the eventual 0–1 loss by playing five minutes as a substitute. On the 7th of July 2016, after making one appearance all season, Málaga opted to rescind his loan contract, and he returned to Milan. He had represented his national team once that summer though, picking Morocco as an adult after playing for Italy at youth level. Further unsuccessful loan spells followed with Dutch club PEC Zwolle, Greek club Lamia, Italian sides Reggina and Carpi before he was signed by Moroccan side Renaissance Zemamra on the 28th of June 2022. Having been described as a "fantasista" in the Italian press, despite his obvious talent he has struggled to establish himself at professional level and to consistently achieve first team football.
