Paul Broughton was born on the 21st of January 1957 in Liverpool and first appeared on our TV screens in the TV series 'Screenplay' (1990). Further appearances followed in 'Between The Lines' (1992), 'Spender' (1993), 'Peak Practice' (1993), 2 episodes of 'Three Seven Eleven' (1994) and 'Mystery!:Cadfael (1994). He then got a big break when he was given the part of the local builder Eddie Banks in 'Brookside' 1995-96). Lottery fever hit the residents of the Close when Eddie and wife Rosie became the first major lottery winners to be featured in a soap opera. The syndicate set up by the Banks and the Crosbie families comes good, and the two families find themselves winning a share of the top prize. However, they soon find out that winning such a large amount of money could bring them more trouble than they bargained for. Rosie, as a traffic warden, fell into disgrace when she blew all of her Lottery winnings in a gambling frenzy which saw her hiding bills and letters from Eddie and confiding in her sister. Then Trevor Jordache's reign of terror came to an end in 1993, after Mandy and daughter Beth murdered him. They later buried him underneath the patio of their house, with help from fellow Close resident Sinbad. However two years later in 1995, the body was discovered by the new house owner Eddie Banks, after he was trying to find a leaking waterpipe connected to the house. There followed one of the most talked about moments in a soap when Eddie and Jimmy discovered the corpse. Digging away beneath the flooded patio, they discovered something wrapped up in a bin bag. Eddie pulled the bag open and a hand popped out and Eddie jumped 10 feet backwards in shock, followed by Jimmy Corkhill.
More TV work followed after leaving 'Brookside', and after a second appearance in 'The Bill' (1992-98) and in 'Heartbeat' (1998), he was given another major role as DC Frank White in 'Liverpool 1' (1998-99). This was followed by two TV movies, 'Trial By Fire' (1999) and 'In His Life: The John Lennon Story' (2000). After 2 episodes of 'Merseybeat' (2002) and 3 episodes of 'Ultimate Force' (2002-2003) we then saw Paul appear in more series, such as 'Coronation Street' (2005) as a solicitor, 'Holby City' (2005) and a third appearance in 'Casualty' (1993-2009). He wasn't seen much then on TV until 2017 when he was in 2 episodes of 'Doctors' before another major part in 'Clink' (2019) as P.O. Brian Trent in a series telling the story of a group of women thrust together by their life choices as they establish a sisterhood amongst the prison walls.

Besides his TV work Paul was a major player in stage production
locally, such as 'A Comedy Of Terrors' (1997), when first performed at
the Everyman Theatre, with a cast list which read like a who’s who of the
city’s thriving acting and creative talent which featured Paul, Andrew
Schofield and Vince Pellegrino. Besides working elsewhere, he became a
regular cast member in productions at the Royal Court including 'Eight
Miles High' (2008) and in a new production of John Godber's classic,
very funny 'Bouncers' (2013), which saw Paul with Mark Womack, Mickey
Starke and Danny O'Brien at the helm. It tells the tale of club doormen
Ralph, Les, Judd and Lucky Eric
getting ready for another night on the job - and they’ve seen it all. The
actors dart skilfully between various characters at breakneck
speed to conjure up a colourful story of a whole Scouse night out with
the scene shifting seamlessly from giggling girls dancing
around their handbags to drunken lads laughing at graffiti on toilet
walls. Then in 2015 he brought a new bittersweet comedy, co-written and performed by himself and Mickey Starke, at the Royal Court again, 'Shed'. Paul said, "We’d always wanted to do something together. First of all it was
OK, let’s get a play that’s ready made. And then Kevin (Fearon - Royal
Court chief executive) said why don’t you do something together? And we
said that’s a good idea." In 2017 Bill Kenwright identified Paul as the perfect person to play the role of John White, Cilla Black's father in 'Cilla-The Musical'.
Paul is also the Department Head of Acting at The Arden, a drama school in Manchester training the performers of the future offering five BA (Hons) programmes, validated by Sheffield Hallam University.
