James David Holt was born on the 15th January of 1956 in Liverpool but has spent most of his life in Australia. He appeared in a minor role in 'Hoodwink' (1981) and was then in 2 episodes of the TV series, 'The Young Doctors' (1981-82), about the lives, loves and medical complaints of the doctors, nurses and patients at Sydney's Albert Memorial Hospital. In 1983, he appeared in a TV movie known as 'Who Killed Baby Azaria', a story based on the real story of the murder mystery that rocked Australia at one point. The movie received awful reviews by critics and absolutely tanked with no audience liking it. He also had another minor role in 'Under Capricorn' (1983), before playing a more substantial role as Harold Larwood in 'Bodyline' (1984), the dramatization of the 1932/33 Test cricket series between England and Australia. Played in Australia, the series gained notoriety in Australian and worldwide cricketing history for the fact that the English team (headed by captain Douglas Jardine) applied a bowling technique called "leg theory", or more commonly, 'bodyline'. It was on the film set in 1984 that he met his future wife Robyn Jean Holt and they were married on the 19th of January 1985. She is a top level publishing executive in a major company and they have a beautiful daughter named Hannah Holt.

During a time period from 2002 to 2006, Jim was based in Russia and during the same time his wife Robyn was also working there as the managing director at Condé Nast who publish Russian Vogue, AD, GQ and Glamour. Moving to the UK in 2006 Robyn became the fundraiser and financial advisor also interim CEO for Tyler Brule's Global media brand Monocle. They were back in Robyn's birth city of Sydney by 2009 and in 2016 it was reported that they always said they wanted to trade in their Woollahra home for something in the Southern Highlands with “a great big garden” to grow vegetables. And, true to their word, the couple paid $1,175,000 for a 8828-square-metre property with plenty of room for the whole rural lifestyle in Exeter, a suburb of Adelaide.
