Paul Angelis was born on the 18th of January 1943 in Dingle, Liverpool to an English mother, Margaret (née McCulla), and a Greek father, Evangelos Angelis. He attended St Francis Xavier's Grammar School, Liverpool and St Mungo's Academy, Glasgow and then worked for merchant banks for six years before training as an actor at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Having moved to London, he then toured with a children's theatre company. This older brother of Michael Angelis, of Liver Birds' fame, would become an imposing actor, and would be seen on our screens many times in the '70s and '80s, but would quietly make his substantial presence known for some time before that.

In Robin's Nest with Tony Britton (1977) |
After first appearing on TV in 1967 in the series 'Sir Arthur Conan Doyle' he made several individual appearances in other shows, including being several voices in 'Yellow Submarine' (1968). His first regular TV role was as PC Bannerman in the popular cop drama
'Z-Cars' (1967-69), where he racked up an impressive 128 episodes, but he swiftly followed that up with an impressive roll-call of appearances in '70s favourites such
as 'Callan', 'Softly Softly', 'The Sweeney' as as armed robber and hard
man, and Barney Prince, in the episode 'Stoppo Driver'. Add to those 'The
Onedin Line', 'The Gentle Touch', 'Bergerac', 'Juliet Bravo', and
'Casualty' and appearing in some of the more adventurous drama of
the period, such as 'Armchair Theatre' and the 'Thirty-Minute Theatre'
play 'Under The Age' as Susie, pushing the envelope as a transexual
bartender in an edgy piece of TV theatre. Besides these serious roles he
was involved in many comedy shows such as 'Man About The House',
'Porridge', 'George and Mildred','The Liver Birds', 'Robin's Nest' and
'Porridge', as the tattooed former seafarer 'Navy Rum'. He also played
Alf Garnett's son-in-law Mike in the 1972 film, 'The Alf Garnett Saga',
as he took the randy Scouse git role in what was a painful fascinating
grim, but barely satirical, document of the sexism and racism of the
times.
