Frederick William Ferris was born on the 13th of July 1905 in West Derby, Liverpool. In the earlier years of his career, he was known as a comic actor, featuring in the BBC Home Service's radio comedy Club Night as 'The Wacker', starring David Morris, which ran between 1950 and 1955.
He was briefly in Coronation Street in 1962 when he played Mr Edward Appleby, the father of Colin Appleby, who told the residents that his daughter-in-law Christine Appleby's had been killed in a car crash.

The former comic appeared firstly in the TV series 'The Grove Family' (1954-57) and then in the TV version of 'Club Night' (1957) again as 'The Wacker'. Fred appeared in many television series in the 1960s and played a large number of police characters appearing in such shows as 'Knight Errant Limited'(1959), 'ITV Playhouse' (1960', 'Deadline Midnight' (1960-61), 'The Big Pull' (1962), 'Drama 61-67' (1963), 'The Avengers' (1962-63), 'Z-Cars' (1962-64), 'Dixon of Dock Green,' (1961-63), 'No Hiding Place' (1960-63), in 7 episodes of 'The Plane Makers' (1963-64), 'The Saint' (1963), in 'Planet of Giants', 'Doctor Who' (1964) and finally in 'sergeant Cork' (1966)..

Fred was also known for his parts in 'The Big Pull' (1962) as Det. Supt. Allison, 'The World of Tim Frazer' (1960) as Norman Gibson, 'Sky West and Crooked' (1966) as a Policeman and 'A Kind of Loving' (1962) as Althorpe. He was previously married to Phyllis Ross Laurie.
Fred died on the 25th of January 1978 in Westminster, London aged 72.
