Pool Of Sound - Chemistry Lane

'Chemistry Lane' is a quintet based in Chester, formed in 2011 they feature Simon Jones on vocals and guitar, Tom Scargill on guitar, Sam Pritchard on guitar and synthesizer, Dan Pritchard on bass and synthesizer and Sean Stockton on drums, sampler and synthesizer. They started when they were still at school with three of them in a band together at that time, but all knew each other socially. In a way 'Chemistry Lane' is a development of that initial band and there was an early realisation that they could communicate creatively, but university and wanderlust intervened, after which it took a while for them all to be in the same geographical place, and to complete their line up. In school they were obsessed with 'Stone Roses' drummer Reni, and 'The Smashing Pumpkins' drummer Jimmy Chamberlain. Both having the ability to write drum parts that either lock tightly with the guitar riffs or act as rhythmical counterpoint to another significant element of the music. They are generally of the opinion that George Harrison was the coolest member of 'The Beatles' with his 'All Things Must Pass' album being the best solo offering of any of member of that band. However they listened to lots of different music when they'd just met and started jamming together, hanging out and playing each others records was a big part of their education. Their parents all had pretty good taste in music, so they had access to record collections that contained some real jewels of the sixties and seventies, which reflected their listening habits. This included the likes of Neil Young, 'The Grateful Dead', 'Love', Bob Dylan, Curtis Mayfield, 'Crosby Stills and Nash' plus more contemporary artists like 'My Bloody Valentine', 'Ride', 'Slowdive', 'Soundgarden', DJ Shadow, and many of the acts on Warp Records like 'Aphex Twin', 'Squarepusher' and 'Boards of Canada'. They all spend a lot of time in Hoole, either because they live there or socialise in it’s bars and restaurants. The origin of the band name comes from seeing the street sign of Chemistry Lane and them thinking it was a strange name for a street. They’d talked about it from the point of view of curiosity, but it wasn’t until some time later that it was suggested as the name for the band. Sometimes ideas float around and find their own place, and when it was suggested as a band name, they settled on it quite quickly.

Specialising in atmospheric experimental rock, they self-released two EP's before being signed to Manchester label Victoria Warehouse Records in April 2013. The band then celebrated the release of its debut single 'Faustian' in 2014, being the kind of sonic alchemists who draw upon music from all colours of the musical spectrum; ambient textures, locked rhythmical krautrock, pummelling guitars, soaring melodies and a lot more besides. As heavy as they are beautiful, as clinical as they are organic - and in a North West scene which was thriving due to it’s diversity, Chemistry Lane stood completely apart. Having conquered Liverpool Music Week, played The GIT Award 2015 launch and the previous summer’s FestEVOL at the Kazimier (a kind of who’s who of the best NW bands) a new single was out later in that year.

'Mirrored Wall' is another single which is an accomplished piece imbued with the spirit of psychedelia and krautrock, and absorbed in classic new wave sounds. They describe their music as aiming to ‘bridge the gap between the intensity and momentum of a rock band and the clinical electro loops of dance floor hypnosis’. On the evidence of 'Mirrored Wall', that’s something they certainly achieve. The track can be found streaming on Spotify as well as Soundcloud and is released via Mai 68 Records.

They began recording their debut album and re-released the haunting assassination of Kennedy themed 'November’s day parade' as a prelude to their new work. The resulting album, 'Spirals Accelerate' was released in May 2020.
