Pool Of Sound - The Sonder

'The Sonder' is a 4 piece Rock 'n Roll band formed in Huyton, Liverpool in 2017 but didn't complete their current line up until early 2018 after practising in Kyle's shed. The full band consists of frontman Dillon Kelly, Anton Jackson on guitar, lead guitarist Kyle Wilson and Jamie Wild on drums. They are influenced by an array of bands and artists across many genres but perhaps most heavily by Liverpool bands of the past. Lots of comparisons have been drawn up, however the band are keen to avoid the clichés often lashed at new bands emerging from the city. Dillon says, "I think at the start we were deliberately trying to be as much like 'The La's' as we could but, naturally, you go through different phases and different influences start to seep in."

Influenced by the early rock 'n roll sounds of the sixties, they are renowned for their raw, yet catchy music and their focus is on good old fashioned songwriting and creating infectious melodies. This is a recurring intention within their tracks and is best evidenced by the crowds involvement in rarely heard songs at each of their shows. Their debut came in the form of the 'Beneath the Dust' EP following a series of memorable gigs around the city. The response to the 4 song release, in late February 2019, was undoubtedly positive and has already showed a glimpse of what this young band are capable of.

Next, with the EP 'Into The Light', the lads returned sounding more refined and mature. This progression is undoubtedly impressive, as few bands seem to find their groove this quickly. After releasing two EP's in the space of 7 months, featuring a collection of toe-tapping songs, they were featured on BBC Introducing as well as on the half-time playlist at Anfield for the Merseyside derby. Headline gigs at Jimmy's, The Zanzibar as well as appearing at the Smithdown Road Festival have been some of the bands main highlights so far.

Having laid the groundwork, and feeling like they were just getting going, along came the Pandemic and lockdown. Again Everton fan Dillon says, "Luckily, we had a song already recorded called 'Home' which weirdly fitted everything that was going on at the time. We'd love to say it was deliberate and in response to the lockdown but it was more opportunistic than anything". Their last gig, and their only proper one in 2020, was to play to a sold out crowd at Liverpool's Invisible Wind Factory with 'Rats', 'Stone'and 'The Kairos'. They did a 25-30 minutes set trying to get through as many songs as possible.

Another new single 'Rollin' the Dice' was released in December which was recorded at the legendary Parr Street Studios with the even more legendary producer Chris Taylor. Gigslutz commented on the single on Twitter, "Liverpool’s best kept secret, but not for long". On their Facebook page in December 2020 the band announced, "We're happy to announce that we'll be supporting Liverpool legends 'Space' with the help of 'The Real People' on 27th February."
