Pool Of Sound - Beija Flo

Born in Harlow, Essex, Beija Flo was brought to Liverpool by LIPA, and the young artist, residing in Toxteth, is one of the most exciting new acts on Merseyside, combining the familiar elements of her music with more abstract, cutting-edge and innovative ideas. Christened by her father, her name is quite interesting as it's Portuguese for hummingbird. Her father was one of the first people to bring the music and dance-infused Afro-Brazilian martial art of capoeira to the UK so Beija was exposed to tropical and exotic influences, as well as the arts, from a young age. Her mum has been in various cabaret acts and was a clown for a few years as well. Musically she names Rufus Wainwright as a big part of her growing up and she loves Tom Waits, with her favourite album being 'The Black Rider' as it is like a story; she also loves story albums like 'The Point' by Harry Nilsson.

Mainly a singer, she is also an artist, poet and photographer. Her live performances are charged with energy and charm and she gives so much more in her gigs with actors going round and taunting the audience and offering sweets, face painting and her message of the day. It is a multi-sensory attack, an onslaught of art, dance performance and education and she likes to do a lot of work with community drama and children’s acting classes. Her shows allow her to make music while making art and incorporating elements of dance and performance. Her single 'Mary' typifies her, being an intense two-and-a-half-minute burst of sonic hypnotism, plus a garishly lovable video with a mix of burlesque performers, comedians, dancers and even members of Wild Fruit Art Collective joining the party juxtaposed against the bleak brutalist architecture which surrounds them.

Universally acclaimed by her peers, she crafts her own universe by pulling together elements of activism with performance art. Impossible to pin down, her sound is one that encompasses everything from open hearted balladry to acerbic punk. Tackling everything from love and relationships through to mental and sexual health, she is truly an artist for our times, juxtaposing her darkest moments against those of enduring hope. Since 2018 Beija has been receiving strong support within the Merseyside area from Getintothis, who called her track 'Mary' their 'track of the year' and said, "Her music and tales can take listeners on a strange journey, telling stories with an incredible power and energy, no matter how laid back the vibe and how quiet the room. Each song contains its own cinematic dramas, complete with its own cast of characters, a quirky director and a brave colourist. The ability to deliver each piece in its own individual style is a joy to behold". She took to the stage for Liverpool Sound City 2019 and has received strong local support from Bido Lito and BBC Introducing as well as national support from LouderThanWar and Birp! In November 2021 she began her first UK Tour supporting 'Princess Goes To The Butterfly Museum' ending on the 9th of December 2021 at 24 Kitchen Street, Liverpool.
