Pool Of Sound - Where Paul First Met John?

The Newsagents is now The Cookery,

A lot of people were aware of John Lennon around Aigburth because he made himself known. Paul McCartney has said, " He was just a ted ( teddy boy ), greasy hair, long sideburns, shuffling around like he was 'Mr Hard'. I saw him on the top deck of the bus quite often, before I met him. I saw him in the queue at a chip shop once and I thought, 'he looks cool'." This would be Mason's chip shop near the the newsagents Paul worked for as a teenager.

Paul had a paper round delivering papers for a Mr Dennis Dune, who owned a newsagent shop, No.85 Woolton Road, which had previously been a confectioners shop owned by a Mr. Abba, so the shop was still known locally as 'Abbas'. This was on a crescent of shops opposite the Cenotaph at the end of Long Lane, Allerton close to South Liverpool's football ground at the time. This was just a five minute cycle ride away from Paul’s house on Forthlin Road and also just a short distance from Julia Lennon's house in Blomfield Road. Paul has also said that as a paper boy he once talked to John outside the newsagents shop, Mason's chip shop was at No.6 Long Lane at the other end of the row of shops from the newsagents.

On the 15th of August 2018 Paul McCartney released the single 'Fuh You' from his album 'Egypt Station', accompanied by a music video directed by his son in law Simon Aboud, which was shot in Liverpool around this very location. In the video when the line 'On the night I met you' is sung the young boy in the video is outside the premises of 85 Woolton Road. The boy's name in the video is Jamie, Paul's first name is James, and it is more than a coincidence that the video is filmed in this location.
Paul has never disclosed the name of the newsagents he worked for as he is obviously aware that to go on record and admit the above details would be destroying the Woolton Fete myth although that is obviously where their 'music convergence' actually took place.
