Here Come The Girls!

Like a Beacon in the murky world of Blatter, Warner and Blazer comes the The Women's World Cup in Canada with the tournament begining on Saturday, 6 June as hosts Canada take on China.
Each of the 52 matches will be shown across the BBC, with every game available to watch on the BBC Sport website, while all England fixtures will be on BBC Radio 5 live.

The first unofficial women’s World Cup took place with the Coppa del Mondo in Italy in 1970 with China hosting the inaugural Women’s World Cup in 1991 and it has continued to grow in popularity and for this tournament the increased interest and investment has begun to translate into the level of professionalism among the 24 teams attending, up from the 16 finalist nations four years ago. Around 10 teams are bringing their own chef, five are travelling business class and one has even enlisted its own private jet to travel between fixtures.

With more and more countries fielding their own exceptionally talented players than ever before, it will mean that, as soon as some of the weaker teams are eliminated in the group stage, the quality of the knock-out rounds ought to make 2015 one of the most tightly contested and fun-to-watch World Cups in recent memory.

This time, with the proximity of the matches in Canada and kick off times ideal for an American audience, there should be even more reason for a lot more people to tune in and pay attention which can only benefit the prominence of the ladies game.
