As Manchester United claim yet another league title and only Aston Villa make way from last season's top eight finishers - is it really time for a Super League ... and who would win that particular showdown?
Perceptions and Facts.
Most educated pundits will continually pronounce that:-
1) Only significant investment is the solution in the search for trophies.
2) In advance of the new season Manchester Utd, Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal will be the main players in the Premier League title chase.
3) If they sign 2 or 3 significant players then Tottenham and Liverpool could finish in a Champions League position (but not stating which of the above teams they would then replace).
4) David Moyes has done a brilliant job at Everton but has taken them as far as they can go.
If you look at the results of those teams occupying the top 7 places currently in the Premier League, when they have played each other this season, this mini-league would look as follows:-
Manchester Utd - Played: 12 Pts: 21
Arsenal __ Played: 12 Pts 18
Everton __ Played: 11 Pts: 16
Chelsea __ Played: 11 Pts: 14
Liverpool __ Played: 11 Pts: 14
Manchester City __ Played: 12 Pts: 12
Tottenham __ Played: 12 Pts: 11
A further look at the transfer outlay for the season 2010-2011 ( approx. £'s ) would read :-
(NB: we do not deal in NET - the amount of money disappearing on wages and agents makes any calculations in that respect void)
Everton __ Nil
Manchester Utd __ £10.9 m
Tottenham __ £12.5 m
Arsenal __ £13.5 m
Liverpool __ £79.8 m
Chelsea __ £87.2 m
Manchester City __ £136.5 m
It would appear that for all they have spent, Manchester City have struggled against their peers whereas Everton have performed at their best when playing the better footballing sides and at this moment in time only Manchester United are certain to win a trophy this season, with Manchester City a possible F.A. Cup.
Perhaps the experts should spend a little time looking at the facts before reiterating each others copy with predictable phrases that bear no resemblance to what is really going on.
