Liverpool Pub Crawl - The White Hart

The White Hart, in a converted Grade II listed townhouse, is located at 23 Hope Street but the Well that is dated 1766, often referred to as the Hope Farm Well, is located in the beer garden. While the stone structure itself is largely a decorative feature cobbled together, it sits on a 100% genuine historic well. There is a long history behind this Georgian house, from a Gentlemen's Club frequented by members of the Masonic Hall, to the original 23 Club in the 1950s. It then became El Macho, a Mexican restaurant in the 1980s before closing in 2010 to become The Clove Hitch bar and restaurant. When the team behind the Clove Hitch restaurant realised they had a space beneath their eatery that was perfect for a pub they opened the 23 Club in 2013. The Keystone which was a favourite hangout spot, closed down in May 2022. People loved the Keystone for its lively vibe and community events, like open mic nights and its whole ethos was to strive to promote the great breweries that were influenced by the previous bar that resided here, The 23 Club. The place has now been through some major renovations and rebranding to become the White Hart, which now has six rotating cask ales and a two beer gardens. The venue is a cask ale pub emphasising sourcing rotationally from local brewers, along with a range of whiskeys.

It re-opened as The White Hart in January 2024 and when you step in you’re welcomed by a dark, moody vibe that feels both inviting and classy. The décor features antique furniture that adds to its historical appeal. One standout element is the taxidermy animals scattered around, including ferrets, goats, and deer heads, which give the place a unique flair. The main bar area took over ten weeks to finish and includes historical touches; for example, the front fascia was crafted from the back of a 19th-century church pew sourced from Taylor’s classic furniture. This level of detail shows a dedication to creating a genuine pub experience and in addition it has two beer gardens, heading to the rear there is a greenhouse glass conservatory leading to one. These are shared with another new pub, The Engineer, with both snug pubs having been created by The 1936 Pub Company, The rear bar has an entrance and signed 'The Engineer' is the same building sharing common parts upstairs and various cubby holes and seating areas to choose from. The Engineer is a smaller pub that used to be the kitchen of the Keystone and is housed in the former coach house and most recently a large commercial kitchen. It opts for a post-apocalyptic aesthetic set in the mid-20th century. You can get to it from Arrad Street or through the White Hart itself. The Engineer aims to offer a similar vibe with four cask lines and a warm atmosphere for those wanting a more intimate drink experience. It has several small rooms that provide privacy for groups wanting to catch a game or just chat away from the main bar. This layout really enhances the experience by catering to different visitor preferences and is described as the "ultimate backstreet boozer".
