Liverpool Pub Crawl - Metrocola

Hannah's Bar on Leece Street had a long history in Liverpool and in its time, Hannah's was known as "one of the city's most popular established night spots". From the 90s through to 2018, the venue was owned and ran by the Conteh family, Kelly Conteh and her husband Gerry Conteh owned Hannah’s from 1996 until 2018. It started off as a very small pub, with a dodgy history and great live bands but had the support of people from day one. It quickly became a popular stop off for students and locals alike for many years, and over time expanded to become well-loved in the city centre. The bar was known for its cosy atmosphere, comfy chairs and cheap drinks. It was also loved for its stunning views of the Liverpool skyline from its top floor terrace, overlooking St. Luke's Church at the top of Bold Street. For years, generations came to Hannah's Bar, whether it be for a student crawl through the city centre or to catch up with some friends over the weekend. But in September 2021, after decades in business, the much loved bar announced its permanent closure.

The transformation into the new bar on the site, Metrocola, honours Hannah's legacy while stepping into the future with an entirely fresh aesthetic. It was in October 2021 that it was announced that a new concept venue was opening with Metrocola, the sister site of The Old School House on Lark Lane, serving everything from a selection of draught, cask and craft ales, to cocktails, wines and Detroit-style pizzas. Prior to opening, the bar front was kitted out with stylish yellow tiles, with the selection of drinks on display in front of an exposed brick wall. Metrocola opened its doors in November 2021 and Rob Gutmann, who took over the site said he viewed Metrocola as part homage to his former venue Korova. Back in September 2005 Korova had opened on Fleet street, on the site that is now the Black Rabbit, and became a cultural hub for musicians. It was the brainchild of Rob Gutmann, Evol promoter Steve 'Revo' Miller, Daniel Hunt and Reuben Wu of Liverpool band 'Ladytron'. The venue had numerous rooms with a bar section and a basement area for gigs, with the likes of 'Klaxons', '2manydjs' and 'Florence & The Machine' performing there in its time. Rob Gutmann said, "Korova is still fondly remembered, which is very gratifying, and whilst I think it should remain a memory I hope both the Korova generation and its successors will appreciate the lineage between the two places. Korova's gigs are now part of Liverpool's music scene heritage and its role as a vibrant social hub is something Metrocola will aim to honour." Metrocola brands itself as a beer hall, cocktail bar, diner, events and gigs space that majors in cask and craft ales, Detroit pizza, tunes and live sport. Set across two floors with its own terrace, mega views and plenty of plant life, Metrocola looks set to be a crowd-pleaser for every season. The Glass Box Room is one of the venue's most striking features, blending industrial elements with nature through the use of an all-glass ceiling, dangling vines, and soft lighting. The retractable roof offers an open-air experience, creating a dynamic indoor-outdoor feel that pairs beautifully with Liverpool’s skyline views. The Main Roof Light Room is an architectural marvel. Dominated by greenery and string lights, it's a perfect backdrop for day-to-night socialising and attracts all-day-trade. The high ceilings and retractable roof maintain an airy vibe, allowing for plenty of natural light during the day and a cozy, twinkling atmosphere at night. The centrepiece of the Big Yellow Bar Room is, unsurprisingly, its bright yellow bar. This room is a visual statement, drawing attention with its bold color, warm wood-burning fire, and the addition of a second retractable roof. The bar itself, adorned with yellow tiles, contrasts strikingly against the exposed brick backdrop, making it the beating heart of Metrocola’s nightlife.
