The Swan Inn, a Peter Walker & Sons pub known simply as 'The Swan', has stood on Wood Street since Victorian times opening circa 1898. It has a distinctive blue-tiled façade and stained glass windows and was a favorite haunt for bikers, rockers, and punks in the past
Its seating is a combination of wooden pews and tables and it has an exhibition of classic posters and swan-themed paintings. The walls are adorned with various art work depicting Swans and there is a striking and unusual Mural on the stairs leading to the toilets. There is also an upstairs bar overlooked by a mezzanine, previously a trendy wine bar called the Steering Wheel which used to occupy this space. The bar has won many awards from CAMRA and there is a large range of real ales, mostly from the local brewery Cains. The ales are changed often but a couple of old favourites such as Wobbly Bob have been there for years. There is also a huge range of spirits, bottled beers, continental beers, alcopops, wine and ciders available.
There are 3 floors in the Swan Inn with the ground floor the most spacious having a large bar with bar stools, stools, pews and tables. Upstairs is smaller but a bit brighter and the mezzanine level is the newest floor. This is a good space to grab early on in the night if you are expecting a large group of people. The jukebox on the ground floor has long been known to be the best in Liverpool and upstairs is a video jukebox which is updated regularly.
The Swan is part of a classic triumvirate of Liverpool pubs under the same ownership with Ye Cracke on Rice Street and The Pilgrim on Pilgrim Street. John Storton, managing director of Yellow Spider Media who look after all three pubs, said The Swan survived the pandemic with the help of its regular customers. A considerable refurbishment of the Swan in the mid-noughties saw the removing of the ancient – and much disliked – downstairs toilets, but the pub changed little, much to the delight of its regulars.
