Liverpool Pub Crawl - The Shipping Forecast

The Shipping Forecast pub at 15 Slater Street pays tribute to the famous British radio broadcast.  Blending nautical-themed décor with a modern, contemporary twist it aims to offer a relaxed, student-friendly vibe, but also hosts well-known acts and club nights, replacing the cheese-fest 70s glitter-regurgitation that was Flares.
This bar seems something of a departure for this part of town with the emphasis more on relaxed drinking than helter-skelter boozing, so if you're after a Liverpool bar that's unapologetically cool, head to The Shipping Forecast. This place is a three-storey pub-eatery-club-shop with the interiors a cross between a stripped-back loft apartment and Jack Sparrow's love nest: all vintage furniture, reclaimed school chairs and cosy booths, with the odd giant octopus (stencilled onto the wall) thrown in. The nautical theme extends to the signage; upstairs is 'top deck', the basement club 'the hold'. and the lights are low, the bar long and the kitchen open-sided. There's a good list of cocktails, split up into mojito, mule, specials and an impressive list of bottled beers

It also serves up a good line in comfort food, an approach that suits the place well. Eating aside, the Shipping Forecast works hard to keep the punters in and interested. Music nights range from disco DJ's and live indie, to the occasional vinyl record fair, and there is live music and a whole interactive darts experience complete with competitiveness, food and drink. All in all, then, it is a venue where it's at – and you don’t even have to know your portside from your starboard to enjoy it. It has gained a reputation for securing some of the best musical talent out there, luring big-name acts to play in what is essentially a tiny, but brilliant basement. It also hosts a variety of excellent club nights – dance, hip-hop, soul, garage and indie. Previous gigs have included Ghostpoet, Four Tet, Skream and guest DJs including Calvin Harris and Mark Ronson. Acts tend towards the cool end of the spectrum with the standard always high – definitely a mix of style and substance.
