A History Of Liverpool Thespians - Tony Forsyth

Tony Forsyth was born in Liverpool and is noted for his troubled teen portrayals and scouse accent. His first TV appearance was as Danny in one episode of 'Brookside' (1986) but he is best known for his role playing rent-boy 'Michael' in the 1988 British film 'The Fruit Machine', a/k/a 'Wonderland' (USA). 'The Fruit Machine' was a follow up to 'Letter to Brezhnev', written by Liverpool-born Frank Clarke and directed by BAFTA-winner, Philip Saville, and tells the story of two 16 year old gay best friends, Eddie, played by Emile Charles, and Michael, played by Tony Forsyth. The pair go on the run after witnessing the brutal gangland murder of a transvestite club host called Annabelle, played by Robbie Coltrane, at a gay show-bar called The Fruit Machine. The film deals with the themes of sexual ambiguity, loss of innocence, and shattered dreams as Michael has to offer sex to others to protect himself and Eddie from the killer who is pursuing them, whilst making sure that Eddie never finds out. The film follows the two young men as they leave 1980s Liverpool and go down to Brighton, teaming up with an animal rights activist before the film’s inevitably tragic finale.

Next he was in 'The Tall Guy' (1989) as Berkoff Actor before appearing in 'Hard Days Hard Nights' (1990) as Alan, in a story loosely based on the Beatles trip to Hamburg before they hit the big time. Other appearances include the Captive Policeman in Derek Jarman's version of Christopher Marlowe's Elizabethan drama 'Edward II' (1991), 'The Life and Works' (1992), a TV Movie, and finally as Ian Clayton in an episode of 'Heartbeat' (1992).

Tony has also had an extensive theatre career including playing at the Sheffield Crucible Theatre and at the Bolton Octagon Theatre where he was Billy Casper in 'Kes', Chiron in 'Titus Andronicus', Dave in 'Pocket Dream', The Moon in 'Blood Wedding', Malcolm in 'Macbeth', Young Scrooge/Ghost of Christmas Future in 'A Christmas Carol'. He also appeared as John in 'Shelter' and Neil in 'Boystalk' at the Royal National Studio, London and as Claudio in 'Much Ado About Nothing' in the Oxford Stage Company Tour to Malaysia and Japan. For the Royal Shakespeare Company he appeared as Tsarina in 'A Patriot For Me' and in 1998 played Red Rutter, 'the Dribbler', of Todchester Rovers in 'Shooting Stars' written by Basil Thomas at the Chester Gateway. In 1999 he spent time directing at the Greenwich Theatre in London and worked as a Casting Director. In 2000, he took part in a national tour of 'Naked Flame' and in 2002, played Jambo in 'Naked Flame 2 - Fire Down Under!' in the national tour. In late 2023 Tony returned to the industry following a career break.
