Indie pop/ folk singer songwriter Georgia Johnson, born and bred in Liverpool, released her first single 'Sunflowers (Still Grow In Darkness)' on the 3rd of March 2023 and judging by her live performances she is already one of the most exciting future of our local musicians. Written almost a year earlier, she'd had the tune in her head for a while and one night just sat on the bathroom floor, guitar, pen, paper and phone and got it all down, and it grew from there. The lyrics are what she likes to focus most on in the song and stem from growing up in a Liverpool school where she just felt like she was quite different to other kids in her year group, as she focused so much on the arts (drama and music). It was singing solo's in primary school choirs where it all came from, and both her primary & secondary schools, Gateacre School, music scenes were what helped her find her music path the most, going on to studying for a degree, combined with popular music. Now a graduate of Combined Popular and Classical Music at the University of Liverpool, she focuses on folk-rock with her own live band, and also offers vocal lessons specialising in multiple genres, having done qualifications in Musical Theatre singing, before choosing to expand her knowledge broader in her degree. She is also keen to start offering song writing workshops. Having built a good following playing live around Merseyside she decided the time was right to release her first single. The song, produced by Joe Sage, takes a mellow tone and has hints of Eva Cassidy’s 'Autumn Leaves' as her vocals are similarly soft and the lyrics of both use nature to contextualise their stories.
Georgia cites Phoebe Bridgers as her influence, stating that every time she listens to her, she always discovers something unique. Her second release of 2023, 'The Moon' had a more energetic vibe as she delivers a more expressive, brighter vocal delivery. This allows her even more chance to showcase the spectrum of tones her voice is capable of. Yet again, she offered lyrical conceits that are unique and romantic, showcasing her fantastic songwriting ability. She took the stage for her highly anticipated debut headline show at Jimmy's, showcasing her unique blend of indie-pop.
