A History Of Liverpool Thespians - Kate Fitzgerald

Kate Fitzgerald was born on the 3rd of July 1956 in Liverpool and attended Notre Dame Catholic College girls' school, later graduating from drama school. Her first appearance on television was in 1979 on ITV Playhouse in the Willy Russel play 'The Daughters of Albion' and went on to star in Russell's 'Educating Rita' at the Liverpool Playhouse in 1981. Willy himself co-directed the production in the February of 1981, working alongside Pip Broughton and the roles of Frank and Rita were taken by the Playhouse’s then artistic director William Gaunt and by Kate. Kate said: "It was a very very happy time. I think it was the first professional job that I'd done in Liverpool. I'd met Willy when I got cast in a television play of his, 'The Daughters of Albion', and we'd got on extremely well and kept in touch and had become friends by then. So he asked me to do it. And what had been so exciting for me when as a teenager I'd gone to the Everyman, on the stage for the first time I saw people that represented my life. And I hadn’t seen that before. And to do a play that I so identified with, that in a way could be my life but with different variations on it, I read it from start to finish and just felt as if I knew that woman. Completely. I think there had been talk of me taking over from Julie (Walters) in London because there was talk at the beginning of me doing it and I couldn't, I wasn't available. I was in a long contract with the RSC. Then there was talk of me taking over from her, and then the Liverpool thing came up and for me there was no question. There was absolutely no question."

Following an appearance as Ariel  in the TV Movie drama 'The Tempest -Act IV' (1984), she debuted on-screen in the Channel 4 soap, 'Brookside' during the episode broadcast on the 27th of August 1985. Doreen was introduced as part of the new Corkhill family consisting of herself, husband Billy Corkhill, and their two children Tracy and Rod. She was portrayed as the aspiring housewife who wants to buy her own home, but is a shopaholic and over spender. Consequently, Billy risks financial ruin to help Doreen get her ideal home on Brookside Close. Eventually the Corkhill's financial worries became too much with  Billy getting involved in a robbery, causing the couple to split, and a dramatic exit story saw Doreen's marriage end and for her to abandon her children, but she later returned to find Billy had moved on with Sheila Grant. Kate decided to leave 'Brookside' in 1987, citing exhaustion and issues with Doreen's characterisation.

Further TV appearances followed in 'Casualty' (1994-97), 'The Lakes' (1997) and 'The Lily Savage Show' (1997), and she appeared in 'Movies 'Til Dawn' (1997), before moving on to the ITV television series 'Peak Practice' (1998) as Andrew Attwood's sister, Chrissy Booth, for four episodes. In 1999, she portrayed Mrs. Delaney for 2 episodes in 'Queer as Folk'. During this period she appeared in 9 episodes of  'The Bill' (1993-2003) as various characters, but mainly as Lillian Rickman. In 2004, she starred as Dorothy Potts in the film 'Under The Mud' and in 2014, she played Vera in 2 episodes of 'Cilla'. In 2015, she achieved a lifelong ambition when joining the cast of 'Coronation Street' in a recurring role as Beth's mum, Nancy Tinker, for 13 episodes from 2015-2019. She said: "It’s a dream come true, and one that's been a long time coming. To put this into context, I wrote myself a list of three acting ambitions when I graduated from drama school. The first was to work for the Royal Shakespeare Company, the second was to play Lady Macbeth, and the third was to appear on Corrie. I achieved the first two shortly after graduating, so to have finally achieved my third goal is a fantastic feeling. I had an absolute ball working on the set and hope that my character Nancy may return at some point soon." In 2017, she starred as Loretta Chase in the ITV sitcom, 'Benidorm' as the eccentric mother of Sheron Dawson, remaining in the main cast for 17 episodes until 2018.
