Born on the Wirral in 1995, Cal Ruddy is an award winning singer-song writer from New Brighton and has performed across the UK and Ireland. Lucky to grow up around great music, from an early age he was exposed to lots of different artists and genres and this definitely had a big impact on him. His parents introduced him to people like Marc Bolan and 'T-Rex', David Bowie, 'The Rolling Stones', Ian Dury and 'The Clash' and his Grandparents always played classic country records and 50s and 60s rock 'n roll so through them he discovered the likes of Elvis, Johnny Cash, The Everly Brothers and Jim Reeves. With his Nan and Grandad both Irish his nan from Nenagh in County Tipperaryand grandad from Newry in Northern Ireland, he also got a decent education in traditional Irish Music and is very proud of his Irish heritage. He started teaching himself bass guitar when he was 14 and a few months later discovered he could also sing so started writing his first songs when he was 15. When he was 15 his grandad bought him his first guitar from Dawson’s in Liverpool and he made his live debut at Vanilla, a little bar in Hoylake on The Wirral. He began playing rhythm guitar in bands when he was 16/17 but then as started playing more and more live shows and as he grew in confidence he decided to start the whole 'Cal Ruddy' thing.
In June 2016 music blog Getintothis' Craig MacDonald had this to say about him. "Hailing from New Brighton, fresh faced acoustic troubadour Cal Ruddy wowed the swell that gathered to see him at Sound City recently and following a stint of spell binding support slots, the singer songwriter is primed to take the step into the limelight having just released his debut single 'Maria'. Filled with emotive lyrics that brim with confidence, Ruddy is equally proficient on his instrument of choice and crafts irresistible endearing folk pop with an ease beyond his years. With the songsmith set to play West Kirby Live this Saturday, it’s the perfect opportunity to see this special talent." In 2016 he played an astonishing 150 gigs across the country and also released his debut EP 'Communication' which attracted attention from across the nation.
With Steve Powell, producer to Mick Head and Edgar Jones & The Stair,s at the helm his debut album 'Elliston Place' was released in November 2020. He wrote the songs for it during a songwriting trip to Nashville, USA in September 2017. During his time in Nashville he worked in studios with songwriters and producers from Palmer Global Ink. Allen McKendree Palmer the CEO of PGI became his mentor and he wrote in one on one sessions with him, Corey Lee Barker, Blake Densmore and Charles ‘Pevy’ Pevahouse. One of his favourite shows to date was his headline show at The Cavern Club in May 2017 as it was his debut performance at the club. Also memorable was his headline show at Studio 2 Parr Street in October 2019, which he says was a really magical night as well. The year 2019 started off with a bang for Cal with airplay on BBC Introducing Merseyside, Radio City, and features on ITV’s
Granada Reports and Channel 5. This was great media exposure for an
artist labelled 'accomplished, reliable and ever excellent' by
Getintothis. Having also worked with Romanian airline, Blue Air in the
Italian cities of Milan and Bergamo in 2017 and performing at 38,000ft
onboard a plane, the sky is definitely not the limit for Cal.
His
vintage sound, particularly his honest, passionate vocal at times emits
haunting waves of early Lennon. The love for his craft pours into the
audience through memorable melodies and a twinkle in his eye. "Ruddy is
unique, fearless and ready for national exposure” – Buz Magazine. "This Americana Singer/Songwriter was Winner of Best Live Entertainer at The Liverpool Lifestyle Awards 2019 and Runner Up in 2022. His rich vein of form continued into 2022 with the release of new songs from his EP 'The Edenhurst Session' available via the Klee Music website. The EP is very pleasing to the ear and has a real
feeling of nostalgia. Something that can take the listener back to happy
times. Lyrically he explores many topics, heartbreak, love,
frustration, yet within these sentiments of gloom there is a sense of
hope and happiness."
