A History Of Liverpool Thespians - Artro Morris

 


Timothy James Artro-Morris was born in Liverpool on the 17th of May 1926. His family came from Llanbedr, Gwynedd and his career began in repertory in the mid 1950s. He appeared on television and films during the 1960s,1970s and 1980s in, to name a few popular ones, 'The Avengers' (1963-66), 'The Liver Birds' (1972), 'Citizen Smith' (1977), 'The Onedin Line' (1977)  and 'Minder' (1984). He made his small screen debut as an Arab in 'The Riddle of the Red Wolf' (1958) but his first main role was as Harry Mason in 9 episodes of 'Taxi!' (1963) starring Sid James and then another main part as Jaques Two in the TV series 'A Tale of Two Cities' (1965). Work on TV was plentiful as he appeared in many shows, including 10 episodes of 'Z-Cars (1962-1976), before another main role in 12 episodes of 'The Gold Robbers' (1969) as DS Tommy Thomas. Other lengthy roles came in 'Emmerdale Farm (1975-76) playing William Hadderwick, aka Preston Bil (PB), then in 5 episodes of the TV series 'Lorna Doone' (1976) as Reuben Huckaback and in the TV comedy drama mini series 'Eh Brian! It's a Whopper' (1984).

He married the actress June Murphy on the 12th of October, 1960 and they both starred in 'The Avengers', but not in the same episode, however the marriage did not last long with June marrying Brian Cullingford in 1968. Arto's big-screen debut came with 'The Witches' directed by Cyril Frankel in 1966, as an uncredited role as Porter and he is also known for 'Return to Treasure Island' (1986) directed by Piers Haggard, with Brian Blessed starring as Long John Silver and Christopher Guard as Jim Hawkins and in 'The 39 Steps' (1978) and 'The Corn Is Green' (1979) starring Katherine Hepburn, Patricia Hayes, Anna Massey and Toyah Willcox. In one of his last movies Artro plays an elderly Judge in 'Still Crazy Like a Fox' (1987), in 2 episodes of the TV series 'Howards Way' (1986-87) followed finally by 'Rockliffe's Folly' (1988).

He died died aged 87 years in his beloved home in Llanbedr, North Wales on the 11th of February 2014 after a struggle, and was cremated at Bangor (Gwynedd) Crematorium on 21st February 2014. The name 'Artro' derives from the River Artro which outfalls into the Cambrian Bay south of Harlech.
