Pool Of Sound - Black Borough

'Black Borough' is a collaborative project between artists wanting to encourage more collaboration in Liverpool and all over the country. This electric supergroup emerging from South Liverpool released their anticipated, self-titled EP late 2022. In November 2022 MC Nelson tweeted, "Big love to everyone in Liverpool who witnessed the first @blackboromusic gig when we supported the legendary @IAmKRSOne a few days back. Our debut EP drops next week (24/11) too excited for the world to hear!" They hope their EP demonstrates the power of coming together.

Debut EP

The four tracks explore themes of identity, coming of age and authenticity in the industry. The EP opens with 'Welcome to my City', a strong bassline is heard throughout the tune, channeling rudimentary 90’s hip hop with an experimental twist. The introductory track discusses the reality of growing up black in Merseyside. From the chill, jazz rap in 'Lying Rappers' with a hook, "0151 no lies, one love" reiterating the Liverpool pride; To a Neo-Soul type groove similar to Erykah Badu in the penultimate track 'Numbers Game'. With references to artists such as Steve Lacy and Paul McCartney, 'Black Borough’s' music is relevant to all generations of listeners. The exploration of sound that takes place over the four tracks manages to portray exactly what 'Black Borough' are aiming to achieve. It’s evident that this group will have some exciting plans in 2023 as they put Liverpool’s hip/hop scene on the map.

In 2023 they opened the Africa Oyé festival in Sefton Park on the Sunday of the festival. It was announced, "South Liverpool trio, Black Borough, the scouse rap super group made up of solo artists MC Nelson, Dayzy, and Starkey, are bringing a breath of fresh air to UK hip hop. Their jazzy instrumentation, positive ethos, and electric group chemistry has seen them draw comparisons to the likes of 'De La Soul' and 'A Tribe Called Quest', but with a fresh, modern twist. Their debut EP explores themes of identity, coming of age, authenticity in the music industry and the reality of growing up Black in Merseyside."
