Pool Of Sound - The Sand Band

After working in a music shop together in 2002, and playing together for a number of years, guitarist and songwriter David McDonnell and bass guitarist Scott Marmion formed 'The Sand Band' in 2009. It is not that well known nationally and has several band member changes over time including, David McDonnell on vocals, acoustic and electric guitar, Wayne Griggs on organ and space echo, Scott Marmion on pedal steel and acoustic guitar, Bob Picken on double bass and bowed bass, Jay Sharrock on Drums, Max Goldberg on guitar and Ben Curtis on organ. Previously McDonnell played live guitar on Richard Ashcroft's 2002 Human Conditions tour and 'The Coral's' The Invisible Invasion tour  while Marmion played in Liverpool band 'Ella Guru'. They both got together in 2009 to record 'All Through the Night' at McDonnell’s Sefton Park flat in Liverpool. They signed to Deltasonic Records alongside 'The Coral' who he had joined previously in 2005 as a replacement for Bill Ryder-Jones. The band performed at Heavenly Records, The Heavenly Social in London and signed to Martin Kelly's Heavenly Songs publishing.

After playing Liverpool Sound City festival in 2010, they released their first album 'All Through The Night' in January 2011 by Alan Wills on Deltasonic to a positive critical reaction being described by Mojo Magazine in January 2012  as "one of the best albums of the year". However with only a few hundred copies available, it entered mythical territory as people would only listen to it online. After this release, and following the digital single 'Set Me Free' in March 2011 which featured two B-sides 'Way Back When' and 'All Is Forgiven', 'When We Kiss' and 'Mistress' were released on 7” white vinyl in November 2012 to mark the launch of Dave Hewitson's new Eighties Vinyl Records label. A follow up album entitled 'Leave Some Light' was supposed to see the light of the day but fans were left wondering what exactly had happened to Dave and his group. Dave explains, " I was single and looking for something. I put all my energy into the music and the process seemed fast to me but then friends would say they hadn't seen me for a year! It was a strange time because I had to stop promoting the album to go and play with Noel Gallagher. I'm 45 so Oasis were a massive thing for me and it was incredible. It didn’t end how I hoped but I still regard it as a positive experience. Playing with Noel was amazing and it was a big influence on me. I went into 'The High Flying Birds' as a fan of his music and I came out of them as a fan of his music. I’m grateful I got to do that."

With 'All Through The Night' putting him back on the musical map, David is gearing himself up for another crack at the musical merry-go-round - only this time there will be no distractions. He says, "After Noel I just wanted a break and wanted to do something else. I tried different things and they didn't work but I was always doing music in the background." 'The Sand Band’s' 'All Through The Night' was released on the 4th of September as part of Love Record Stores 2021. The campaign, originally launched in 2020 to raise awareness of the challenges faced by record stores during the COVID-19 pandemic, continued to shine a light on music retail in the UK in 2021. The album originally featured John Head of 'Shack' and Ian Skelly of 'The Coral'.

2021 brought a remote collaboration on 'The Sound of Love Returning' with ex 'Minus The Bear' guitarist Dave Knudson's and Sam Bell for Knudson’s solo album 'The Only Thing You Have to Change is Everything'.
