Pool Of Sound - The Dream Machine

'The Dream Machine' is a psychedelic pop band from Liverpool with a line-up of Zak McDonnell (vocals, acoustic guitar and percussion,), Matt Gouldson (backing vocals, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, lap steel, piano), Jack Inchboard (backing vocals, bass) and Isaac Salisbury (drums). As a former member of Hoylake heroes 'The Coral', David McDonnell of 'The Sand Band' lived on the Peninsular in West Kirby for many years and became well known to a generation of musicians through his job working in a Wallasey music shop. Throw in the fact David’s son Zak plays and fronts New Brighton starlets 'The Dream Machine' and he’s pretty much an honoury Wirralian. The Illumanist Mean in August 2022 wrote, 'The Dream Machine are a fresh, new ⎌indie band hailing from Liverpool and have already supported 'The Coral', 'Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard', performed at Kendal Calling and Deer Shed Festival and are set to support 'The Lathums' in September'. Zak said, "My dad was a musician when I was growing up in a few different bands so I guess that played the biggest part in it. He had his own band, 'The Sand Band' and I remember standing in Tesco reading all these 5 star reviews in magazines for an album he'd made completely in his bedroom, it blew my head! A few years later, when I was about 13, I started drumming in 'The Mysterines' and learned lots about songwriting through that experience. When I got to about 16/17, I'd left that band and I started playing guitar and writing songs myself which very slowly turned into 'The Dream Machine'. I was making the tea in Parr Street Studios in Liverpool at the time and James Skelly was always encouraging me to start my own band when I'd sit in on his sessions."

October 2022

The band take their name from 'Dream Machine', an invention that recreates hallucinations similar to psychedelics without taking substances, with their music being portrayed as enigmatic, mysterious and very psychedelic. Formed in 2021, after Zak and Matt started getting it together a month or two before the lockdowns started, they then got Jack onboard that same summer and then got Isaac in on drums about a year later. As soon as lockdown restrictions were lifted properly they collected their songs and began gigging and releasing them and haven't stopped since and have already gained widespread support including Steve Lamacq, Radcliffe & Maconie and Chris Hawkins on BBC Radio 6 Music, John Kennedy on Radio X, Gary Crowley on BBC Radio London, Dave Monks on BBC Introducing in Merseyside as well as repeat plays across Amazing Radio. 'The Dream Machine' eschews a playful take on 60s and the current wave of psychedelic acts. This is what some had to say :-

“Liverpool’s premier psychedelic infused four piece” – Steve Lamacq, BBC Radio 6 Music
“A new Liverpool band with a gothic psychedelic feel” – Chris Hawkins, BBC Radio 6 Music
“I’ve been loving The Dream Machine’s records they’re one of my new favourite bands from Liverpool, and they’re tremendous” Stuart Maconie, Radcliffe & Maconie, BBC Radio 6 Music
“Gorgeous” – Gary Crowley, BBC Radio London
“My favourite new band” – James Skelly, The Coral

Having released three EPs to date, with the most recent being 'Vol 3: Pooch Slingers' Wild Round-Up!' in 2022, they have supported the likes of The Lathums, MELT and The Bug Club on tour. Dinked on Twitter,  'A young band we've been watching for a while now. Really stoked to bring you the hotly anticipated debut album, ‘Thank God! It’s The Dream Machine…’ it is the hotly anticipated debut album from The Dream Machine. A self-produced collection of 12 tracks exploring everything from love and loss to angels, dogs and The Devil.'
Recorded on an 8-track in the winter of 2021 in the bands rehearsal space. The album treads a familiar path of 60’s inspired pop anthems, psychedelic-tinged country, punk, doo wop and everything in-between.

The Dream Machine will tour the UK in spring 2023.
