Paul Lester in the Guardian had this to say about this band in 2014, " Limpid guitar lines, massive hooks and crystalline melodies: new Liverpudlian band Gulf make ravishing psychedelic pop, drenched in reverb and melancholy. With a line-up of Joshua Gorman on drums, Jake Brown on bass, Mark Jones on lead vocals/synth/guitar, Femi Fadero guitar/backing vocals and Thomas Murray on guitar/backing vocals.
Paul Higham of Music blog Getintothis also reviewed their third release in November 2014, 'Tell Me Again'. " Liverpool band, Gulf, return with more swirling psychedelic grooves, he is impressed but craves a bolder approach. Said to be in the midst of a tug-of-war between premier indie labels Domino and Bella Union, Liverpool five-piece,, 'Gulf', showcase a new single 'Tell Me Again'. With a swirling, guitar-heavy, psychedelic sound that strongly resembles 'Temples' or 'Tame Impala', 'Tell me Again' is a shimmering pop song, heavy on hooks and indie-disco populism. Like its predecessor, 'Emitter', there remains a nagging concern that the band are some distance from fulfilling their clear potential. Sonically they seem a bit too safe, content to replicate what has gone before without adding too much new to the genre."
In 2015 'Gulf' were the 'Buzz Band of the Week' in the Liverpool Echo as Peter Guy wrote, " Emerging radio-ready with lead track 'Emitter' last September, Gulf join the likes of Lapsley, 'The Sundowners', Hooton Tennis Club' and 'DROHNE', as one of Liverpool’s hottest new musical properties. Adopting a summer-coated hazy-pop template they quickly caught the attention of both the national web and print press with their debut show at the Epstein Theatre alongside 'By The Sea' proving they can match their recorded output on the live stage. With major independent labels circling and a host of summer festival slots in the bag, it seems just a matter of time before they engulf a much wider audience."
