Pool Of Sound - Rongorongo

This Liverpool band, then as a quintet, formed in 2014 and with only one gig under their belt garnered national press on the back of their opening cassette-only release, 'SHIVER'. Ringleader Mick Chrysalid says that they got together over a romantic leaning for extreme metaphors. "Our background is too fuzzy to explain but lets just say we are into psychic self defence even though such a thing doesn’t exist. You can never be too careful. I met Jonny through Bido Lito's pink pages where we small talked our way into each other’s cortex. Our Keith, I met through audio engineering at the SAE institute where we both couldn’t work out how to use a scientific calculator but at least developed our ears. Alex Walker is a brand new member who people may remember from the bands ASBOs and Ticks. Phil Howells I’ve known ever since we both got to the second stage of auditions for the band Gorillaz before being ultimately rejected by Jamie Hewlett for 'not being real enough'."

By 2017 the dream pop six piece, 'RongoRongo' had been taking Merseyside by storm and earning themselves critical acclaim as well as a growing fan following with their atmospheric, synth led sound. Made up of Sam Gill on drums, Our Keith on bass, Alex Walker on guitar, Jonny Davis Le Brun on guitar, Phil Howells on guitar and Mick Chrysalid on vocals, the six have a distinctly Scouse feel, while remaining very much their own. In 2018 the music blog Getintothis saw them at the Shipping Forecast and had this to say, " Rongorongo filled the role of main support perfectly, with their brand of mid-tempo, mesmeric killer tunes. The six-piece have a large following in Liverpool, as was clear by the numbers that had turned up especially to see them. In a set shorter than we’ve become accustomed to seeing the band play, Rongorongo wrapped up their slot with crowd favourite, 'Slice Of Heart'. With its slow and intense build up, and frontman Mick Chrysalid menacingly resembling a wily bird of prey, a controlled guitar whine echoes eerily throughout, as the imaginary slice is cut and taken." Fresh from opening for the likes of 'The Vryll Society' and 'The Underground Youth', as well as a single premiere with NME, GIT Award Nominees Rongorongo headlined HUS’ new KOLBOX space on the 11th of March 2017 with some of Liverpool’s finest new talent.

Popped Music attended Freak Scene 2 at EBGBs, Liverpool, on the 4th of April 2019 and had this to say, "Rongorongo are a band that take the bass down into the gutter and provide a level of showmanship through their frontman Mick that you would not expect given their quite sombre and sensible tone. One part rock star, two parts Shakespearean actor, he makes sure that you are drawn in to his web freeing up the musicians surrounding him to do whatever they so wish. For a band that started life as a jam session for a bit of a laugh but found out they were quite good, this fits quite well. Nobody seems desperate for attention, just happy to be playing music for people who enjoy it."

With a taste for macabre sensibilities combined with an uncanny knack for ear tunnelling melodies the ensemble have won keen critical acclaim over the release of two prior EPs (Automatic Hypnotist and their eponymous debut). They are still out and about performing and announce on their Facebook page - Friday 7th October. Kazimier Stockroom with heartwarming TEPID DAYS and the glorious Olowski. Plus us Rongorongo. XxX
