Pool Of Sound - The Mysterines

'The Mysterines' comprise of vocalist and guitarist Lia Metcalfe, bassist George Favager, guitarist Callum Thompson and drummer Paul Crilly. Lia and George met in a Home Bargains in 2014 ( she thought he looked like a bass player ) and they started gigging in New Brighton as teenagers. Then they met Callum and Paul at a Psychedelic Porn Crumpets gig in 2018. Lia Metcalfe's first gigs as a performer were stripped back acoustic shows instigated by her manager, when Lia was aged just 13. She had been brought up on the road by parents who were music obsessives, so it was very much in the stars that she would go on to become a touring musician and a matter of time when she would be a success.

The second release, 'Love’s Not Enough', is a bruising reminder of this nation's rock credibility,  an understated verse powered by Lia's genuinely spectacular vocals reaches its climax in the song's powerful chorus. Their debut EP in 2019, 'Take Control' was similarly explosive, pairing the snarl of Nirvana's more feral moments, with the pop sensibilities of 'Wolf Alice'. It's the kind of music that is unashamed in its embracement of the history and lore around rock bands, even in an era of genre-less listening. It's little wonder they supported bands like 'Royal Blood' and 'The Amazons' with barely a handful of songs out. Lia's songwriting, is a modern twist of the anti-anthems crafted by Nick Cave and PJ Harvey, while she admires Billie Eilish's and 'Big Thief’s' Adrianne Lenker and their razor-sharp observations. She then signed a publishing deal with Domino Records, home to artists like 'Big Thief', (Sandy) Alex G and 'Arctic Monkeys'.

With the band signed to Fiction records they said they were doing what they always dreamed of - being paid to be in a band and make music. The pandemic also granted them the time required to perfect their debut album, 'Reeling',which took more than a year to record, and is a record comprised of material the then 21-year-old Lia had been working on since her teenage years. Despite its creators' youth it is an accomplished affair, comprising 13 tracks of indie-meets-grunge alt.rock that touches on '90s influences including 'Nirvana'  and 'Hole'  as well as the contemporary rock of bands like 'Royal Blood'. They worked with the legendary 'Killers' and 'Wolfe Alice' producer Catherine Marks, who the band said put a lot of herself in the record, and helped to provoke more emotion from their performances, giving the album its raw sound. It was recorded live, like many of their favourite artists, which meant for a lot of takes and they couldn't wait for their fans to hear it. They said 'Reeling' summed up the experience of many during the two years, when gigs came to a stop in the pandemic - but can mean different things to different people.

In early 2020, NME touted 'The Mysterines' as a band, "poised to be the nation's next favourite rock gang' and ‘Reeling’ is an album that sees them grab that title. The Liverpool four-piece are currently sitting in the Top 10 of the UK albums chart with their debut effort, which is rubbing shoulders with releases from the likes of Ella Henderson, Bryan Adams and Franz Ferdinand. With famous fans such as Paul Weller, Lia's vocals feature on his 16th solo album, 'Fat Pop', it's clear 'The Mysterines' will soon be a name on every music-lovers's lips. Looking ahead, there's plenty still to come that will allow Lia, Callum, George and Paul to build on the happiness that being a part of 'The Mysterines' brings. A UK tour to celebrate the release of 'Reeling' is in full swing and includes stops at London's Electric Ballroom and what is sure to be a euphoric hometown show at Liverpool's Invisible Wind Factory. A U.S. run and festival shows including Welcome To Rockville and Kendal Calling, meanwhile, are scheduled for later in the year. An update on their Facebook page in June 2022 said, " These past few days have been fking surreal. Luxembourg, Berlin, and Florence you were all incredible and we had the best times. Thank you to 'Kings of Leon', 'Firenze Rocks', Templehof Sounds for having us. To come home from those dates to watch ourselves on 'Later with Jools Holland' will definitely be seminal moment in our lives."
