'The Fernweh', a literal translation of the German expression for wanderlust, was created by three musicians who first met around 2007, Jamie Backhouse on guitar, Ned Crowther on bass guitar and Austin Murphy on saxophone and keyboard, who had worked together in various bands, i.e ('The Zutons', Candie Payne, 'Smokey Angle Shades', '747s', 'The Stairs', 'Edgar Jones and The Joneses', 'Alessi's Ark'), and wanted to make a record that reflected their shared love of British folk and psychedelia. Sitting on a hill at the Glastonbury festival they discussed wanting to create something fresh and exciting. Austin 'Oz' says, "We never formed a band – we just wanted to make an album that had a certain sense of feeling and a strong identity". So having bonded over a great appreciation for 'Fairport Convention's' fourth album, Liege And Leaf, along with classic English folk music and sixties psychedelics such as 'The Moody Blues' and 'The Zombies', the three set out to try and write an album for themselves rather than anyone else. With a barrage of folk songs crafted for modern day, the group settled for a remote old telephone exchange, just along from Robin Hood’s Bay in Yorkshire, instead of a recording studio. On the trip they befriended a local folk singer and photographer called Robin Dale at the pub and invited him back to the house where he sang an old composition he'd written, 'Seacoal', as well as kindly allowing his pictures to be used as album artwork. He was not the only guest on the album, with Rozi Plain, from 'This Is The Kit', and Alessi Laurent Marke from 'Alessi's Ark' helping out on vocals; with Mirabelle Gilis, a French fiddle player; and zither player, Graham Mushnik also appearing on the album. What had started as an idea for an album by a group of like-minded musicians had developed into a full band, with Maja Angevik joining on vocals and flute as well as Phil Murphy on drums. This was around 2014 and the songs were tweaked over that time until they circulated a four-song EP that gained the interest of 'The Coral's' record label Skeleton Key, which signed the group to a deal. The band soon began playing live shows and released singles in 2018, 'The Liar' followed by 'Is This Man Bothering You?' backed by the sublime instrumental, 'Timepiece', and Next Time Around' all released on the Skeleton Key label.
Their debut eponymous album followed in late 2018 bringing together a collection of songs that are broad-ranging in their scope, colour and mood, examining nostalgia, whimsy, memory and loss through a distinctly British lens, a creative strand that runs through many of the group's influences; Anne Briggs, Frederick Delius, Basil Kirchin, Oliver Postgate, 'The Zombies', Barry Hines, 'Fairport Convention' and 'Joy Division'. Layered vocal harmonies, gentle, steam-train percussion and strokes of piano, acoustic guitars and subtle string arrangements are a feature of this sublime and compelling debut album.
The band threw a Christmas party to launch the album at
the Arts Club, Liverpool where they played all 47 minutes of their
eponymous debut. At the impressive looking event were support slots for
'Skeleton Key', 'Peach Fuzz', Edgar Jones and 'Cut Glass Kings'.
Keeping
their promise to return with new music as soon as possible, the band
released the 'Sunrise' EP in March 2019, originally recorded by 'The Who' in 1967, which has been a favourite of
their live shows. Backed
with 'New Brighton Sigh', the EP's release coincided with a string of
live dates supporting 'The Zutons' and a prestigous slot on the bill at
the Doves Teenage Cancer Trust gig at the Royal Albert Hall. They have announced their second album, 'TORSCHLUSSPANIK!', is available to pre-order with a release date of the 27th of May 2022.
