The Vryll Society |
With Mike Ellis on vocals, Lloyd Shearer on bass guitar, Ryan Ellis on guitar and keys and Benjamin Robinson on drums, they came together through an
understanding that they just wanted to create great music and that was the
ethos from day one. Originally 'The Dirty Rivers', they
decided to ask guitarist Lewis McGuiness if he fancied playing with them. He moulded in
perfectly, fleshing out their new, more psychedelic sound.
As 'The Dirty Rivers' they had already produced an astonishing
early single, 'The Kid' which lay the foundation for what was to come: a
tidal wave of energy, cataclysmic guitar swells, propulsive rhythmical
thunder and a front man whose magneticism proved impossible to ignore.
Having spent a year in rehearsal honing their skills, 'The Vryll Society' were picked up by Alan Willis of Deltasonic Records' and they appeared to have learnt all their strengths through him as their their mentor, Alan Wills, who they had been with since the days when they were a bit more laddish and unexcitable. Alan had watched them and, with his partner Ann, nurtured and honed them until they were truly ready. He told them to hold off gigging for as long as they could. So the group hunkered down, spending three or four weeks on any given
track, and emerged with a newfound appreciation for mood and texture. Mike Ellis says with reverence, "He said to us: 'You only need a practice room to conquer the world'. And he's right, isn't he?"
When Alan Wills sadly passed away in 2014 in such tragic, sudden circumstances the impact rocked not
just Merseyside's cultural community - but the world of music.
Their live shows had created a 'buzz' and their debut single, 'Deep Blue Skies', released in 2015 it was a statement - a swirling mass of
kaleidoscopic riffs, Nuggets-era melodies over-laid by Mike Ellis'
blissed-out vocals. Two more singles followed in 2015, 'Beautiful Faces' and the 'Pangea' EP. Having toured with 'Blossoms', 'Hidden Charms', and the
very much missed 'Viola Beach' in 2016, that year saw them release, 'A Perfect Rhythm'.
A new single, 'Sacred Flight', released via
Deltasonic Records, saw the band kicking off 2017 in the best way
possible. Having produced now a series of critically acclaimed singles, including live stalwarts, 'A Perfect Rhythm' and 'Shadow Of A
Wave', with impressive appearances at the likes of Glastonbury, Reading &
Leeds and TRNSMT, it has helped the boys develop a staunch grassroots following.
The summer of 2018 saw their debut album released, developed organically over several months in the band's rehearsal rooms
and the esteemed Parr Street Studios. 'Course Of The Satellite' is a
majestic leap into space rock, trip hop and psychedelia that spins off
into a myriad of different directions of glowing melodies, intimate
moods and gloriously uplifting choruses.
It was therefore a shock when only months later Mike Ellis announced his surprise departure from the band citing, 'Good old fashioned creative differences' as the reason. Lloyd Shearer apologised to fans after the
parting of ways with Mike caused a UK tour, scheduled for
that month and the next, to be cancelled. "We've achieved many great things
with Mike and we can’t thank him enough," he said.
Mike said, "I wish the lads well and I will also be continuing to
write music myself and will share it with you in the near future."
'The Vryll Society' are reported to be pressing on with new material too in their fresh guise. On their Twitter page in 2019 they posted, " While disappointed to have to let down their fans with this announcement, The Vrylls can reveal they are very much continuing the band and Lloyd, Ben, Ryan and Lewis are currently working on new material , which they look forward to sharing later this Spring."
