Pool Of Sound - The Night Cafe

The Night Cafe

'The Night Café' is an indie group from Liverpool comprising of Sean Martin on guitar and vocals, Josh Higgins on guitar, Arran O'Connell Whittle on bass guitar and Carl Dillon on drums who, whilst in secondary school, bonded over a shared love for the traditional musical heritage of 'The Beatles' and 'The Coral' as well as a mutual admiration of 'Bombay Bicycle Club', 'Kings of Leon', 'Fleetwood Mac' and 'Title Fight', as they initially jammed together in music class.

Taking their name from the Vincent van Gogh painting of the same name, they formed in 2014 when Sean and Josh, thinking of applying for University, spent days skating, where they met up with Arran and Carl, who was working in Jaguar but also wanted to get out of his routine and do something he loved. This resulted in them deciding they wanted to play music together and, all mates, some having played in different bands before, they tucked themselves away to play. In their last year of sixth form they also met Bobert, their manager, and everything started snowballing from there so by the time it got to the point where they would have been going to Uni, they were instead going on their first tour. Thet had also started working on their own material, wanting to make their own sound and develop a little catalogue of tracks. It was something that they wanted to do before they hit their home cities venue circuit, with their first gig playing to a small number in their Gateacre School. Wanting to make their mark with original material, early songs like, 'Addicted' and 'Growing Up', recorded at Whitewood recording studio with producer Robert Whiteley, showcased the boys' skill for crafting relatable love songs made for falling head-over-heels in love, while later singles like, 'Together' and 'Mixed Singles', casually racked up a few million streams due to their killer choruses.

Performing twice at the Buyers Club early on, with one gig sold out, the crowd weren't that impressed at that time. They had been making some waves across the Liverpool scene and had clearly garnered some interest, but it only started to happen at their first Arts Club gig in 2016 when they played as support to the Hertfordshire band 'The Hunna'. With the club heaving less than an hour after doors opened, 'The Night Cafe' took to the stage and that night held the large crowd with a set way beyond the years of the still only young four-piece.

'Get Away From The Feeling'

Their debut EP, 'Get Away From The Feeling' was released in 2017 to critical acclaim and was followed by them opening for the Reading indie band 'Sundara Karma' at the O2 Academy, Liverpool in front of a packed house. It had been a busy year for the group which saw them open for fellow Liverpudlian band 'The Wombats' on the UK and European leg of their spring tour.
In July the following year they released their sophomore EP, 'Bunkbeds', featuring previous singles 'Felicity' and 'Turn', as well as new tracks, 'I'm Fine' and 'Forget At All'. To celebrate the EP's release, they embarked on a UK headline tour in the autumn, including dates in Leeds, Liverpool as well as their biggest headline show to date at London’s Heaven.

0151 Album

Liverpool Sound City announced, "We are very happy to have 'The Night Cafe' return for Sound City 2019. The band blend a melancholic yet vibrant tones with catchy choruses. One of Liverpool's best bands right now and we are so excited to see them live!" On the 8th of May 2019 the band announced their highly anticipated debut studio album, '0151' would be released on the 23rd of August 2019. One review of the album from 'Dork' said, "It's still early days for 'The Night Café', but with '0151' they have made a debut that has the potential of securing them a spot at the top of the indie scene. With steady drum beats and melodies so infectious they should come with a doctor’s note."
'When The Horn Blows' said, "Their long awaited debut album does not disappoint, '0151' is a album full of great indie songs which promise to propel them to being one of Britain's biggest bands".
One of the tracks ‘A Message to Myself’ has a powerful message about mental health issues, guaranteed to connect with many people. Following their own UK tour in early 2022, a further UK tour supporting 'The Wombats' was announced for 2022 on their Facebook page.
