Kieran Shudall, second from left, started off alone as Circa Waves, before deciding on a band when his songs started getting noticed |
Prior to their formation, Kieran Shudall had been working on his own and wrote the demo for 'Young Chasers', recorded it and uploaded it to SoundCloud in one day. As he was uploading it he needed a name and 'Circa Waves' was the first thing that came into his head. Kieran said in 2012, "I'm quite content trying to write great songs. I just fancied uploading a few tracks and seeing what sort of reaction they would get."
'Circa Waves' as an indie rock band were then formed in Liverpool in late 2013. Their initial line-up was chief songwriter Kieran Shudall on lead vocals and guitar, Sam Rourke on bass guitar, Joe Falconer on lead guitar and Sian Plummer on drums. Having all played in bands before, each having had some individual success, the attention they received as 'Circa Waves' was to be completely different to the attention they'd experienced before.
Kieran had met both Sam and Sian at Liverpool Sound City in 2013 through mutual friends and then met Joe Falconer not long after at the same festival where Joe was working as a stage manager. During the summer and autumn of 2013 the band played several short UK tours, including some secret shows which were more like rehearsals as the band weren't performing as 'Circa Waves' then. On the 2nd of December 2013, the band released their debut single, 'Get Away' c/w 'Good For Me' on Transgressive Records and barely two months after forming, one of their tracks, 'Stuck In My Teeth', was revealed by Radio 1's Zane Lowe as his Hottest Record in the World.
The band opened the NME Awards Tour in March 2014, their first Liverpool gig on one of the most prominent national tours in indie music, and on the 10th of June 2014 they released their 'Young Chasers' EP on Virgin Records in the USA. A Japanese edition was also released on the 2nd of July 2014 before they supported 'The 1975' on tour around the UK. They also performed at various other festivals during the summer of 2014, including some in Germany, Australia, the Arenal Sound (Spain), Summersonic in Japan, plus the Glastonbury Festival and the Reading and Leeds Festival at the end of August.
They also supported 'The Libertines' in September 2014 and in November performed their first headline show in their home city at The Kazimier. They marked themselves as one of the UK's biggest music sensations, with a nomination for Best New Band in the 2014 NME Awards and singles like, 'T-Shirt Weather', and 'So Long', helped put the band on the map.
After releasing their debut album, 'Young Chaser', on the 30th of March 2015, which reached No.10 in the UK album chart, they again performed at Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds and Boardmasters, In October 2015 they toured the UK, including a sold out date at O2 Academy Brixton. However it hadn't been all smooth sailing for the band, as drummer Sian Plummer departed earlier in the year on good terms, being replaced by Colin Jones, their sound check technician.
They released the single, 'Wake Up', in November 2016 as a taster for their next album and this was premiered as Annie Mac's 'Hottest Record In The World' on her BBC Radio 1 show.
After releasing their second single, 'Fire That Burns', in January 2017 from their upcoming second album, Different Creatures', they announced the album's release on the 10th of March 2017. It was co-produced by Alan Moulder, who also worked with 'Arctic Monkeys' and 'The Killers', and reached No.11 in the charts, described as a grittier alternative to the breezy summer vibes of their debut Top 10 album 'Young Chasers'.
They played their largest hometown gig to date at the modernised venue Mountford Hall in March as well as performing at the Other Stage at Glastonbury in 2017.
On the 5th of April 2019 they released their third studio album entitled, 'What's It like Over There', to critical acclaim and the following evening did a gig and signing session in Jacaranda Records Phase One in Liverpool. Supported by singles such as, 'Times Won't Change Me', 'Movies' and 'The Way We Say Goodbye', the album which reached No.10 in the UK charts was acclaimed for its mix of indie and pop rock, as well as the experimentation by the band.

Sad Happy Album |
On the 19th of November 2019 they released the single, 'Jacqueline', via BBC Radio 1 which would be a track from their upcoming album, 'Sad Happy', ambitiously to be released in two parts, the first side 'Happy' in January 2020, with the 'Sad' side to follow in March. An interesting track is 'Train To Lime Street', a song that features absolutely no vocals. It's extremely effective, especially in this fast moving time of social media, as just to sit and focus on the noises such as chatter and train tracks the band have almost created a song to meditate and relax to. September 2021 saw the start of a UK and Ireland tour supporting Gerry Cinnamon which concludes in Glasgow in July 2022.
