Pool Of Sound - The Rascals

The Rascals

As indicated in an earlier blog on 'The Little Flames', Wirral lads Miles Kane on guitar and vocals, Joe Edwards on bass guitar and Greg Mighall on drums had split to form a new band 'The Rascals', jamming and writing material in 2007. Miles has said previously in interviews that when they were in 'The Little Flames' they were often called "You Little Rascals". The three had begun to get frustrated with the situation of 'The Little Flames' when it took  nearly a year and a half to make a record and their label requiring them to be writing 'pop hits'. As Miles put it, "We preferred to make something that comes from within you".
Inspired by the 'Arctic Monkeys' and, after writing some new material, the three male players, still only 21 at the time, had the powerful and influential 'Arctic Monkeys' to help propel them into indie's Premier Division. Impressed by Kane's energy and virtuosity as a guitarist, Alex Turner invited him to play lead on '505', the standout track on the 'Arctic Monkeys' second album.

The band were immediately signed to Sony subsidiary Deltasonic, Liverpool's Motown created by Alan Wills, with Candie Payne, 'The Zuton's and 'The Coral' on their books. They played their first gig supporting the 'Arctic Monkeys' at Cardiff International Arena in June 2007 and began gigging furiously with labelmates 'The Suzukis'. In July 2007 they recorded the 'Out of Dreams' E.P at Miloco Studios with Ben Hilier ('The Horrors', 'Blur', 'Doves') which was released in December 2007.

Then, on the 18th of February, 2008, they released a single, called 'Suspicious Wit' which was followed by the release of their debut album, 'Rascalize', in June 2008. Although it was not a commercial success, only peaking at No.100 on the UK Albums Chart for one week, the album was generally well received by critics.
Miles became friends with Everton footballer Leighton Baines who went to a few of their gigs, even to Glastonbury, staying on the band's bus and even went on tour with them. 'The Rascals' made their mark at Glastonbury that year as they played a set the night before the festival got officially underway and also made up one of the opening acts the next day. The trio took to the Other Stage and held the crowd as they performed some of their well known hits.

Miles Kane on stage 2008

Miles and the 'Arctic Monkeys' frontman Alex Turner had been close friends since 'The Little Flames' supported the Sheffield band when both were starting out. So, with the band struggling to enter the mainstream with their debut album and Miles working with Alex Turner in the acclaimed 'The Last Shadow Puppets', gaining some of the attention he so richly deserved, it was no surprise when the band decided to split. Even though they had reconvened to work on some new material they still decided instead to terminate their time together.
A spokesperson told NME, "We can confirm that 'The Rascals' have parted ways. Miles Kane is currently writing new material and has been in the studio recording some tracks by himself. Greg Mighall and Joe Edwards are working on a film project with 'Awaydays' star Liam Boyle."

'The Rascals' of course contributed to the soundtrack of 'Awaydays', a coming of age tale set in their native Liverpool, recording a version of the 'Echo & The Bunnymen' classic 'All That Jazz' for the film's soundtrack.
Miles Kane is currently pursuing a solo career, and continues to be a part of the 'Last Shadow Puppets' with Alex Turner. His debut solo album, 'Colour of the Trap', was released on the 9th of May 2011 and was followed by, 'Don't Forget Who You Are', released on the 3rd of June 2013. He released his latest solo album, 'Coup De Grace', on the 10th of August 2018 via Virgin EMI.
