L-R Miles Kane & Alex Turner |
Having struck up an early friendship, in August 2007 NME magazine reported that Birkenhead born Miles Kane, frontman for 'The Rascals', and the 'Arctic Monkeys' lead singer Alex Turner would be recording an album with James Ford, the former drummer of 'Simian Mobile Disco', who would play drums but also produce the album. They would be eventually be joined by Zack Dawes from 'Mini Mansions' on bass guitar.
Miles Kane had previously guested on '505' and 'Plastic Tramp' at several 'Arctic Monkeys' gigs in 2007 when he and Turner wrote songs together for a collaborative project. Miles also appeared with them at the summer mini-festivals at Lancashire County Cricket Club and at the 'Arctic Monkeys' 2007 & 2013 appearances at Glastonbury.
The duo, who have said they took inspiration from Scott Walker and early Bowie, decided to travel to the West Coast of France with producer James Ford to record an album in just two weeks. On the 20th of February 2008, Miles and Alex revealed they would be known as the 'Last Shadow Puppets' and that their album, to be released in April 2008, would be titled, 'The Age of the Understatement'. The album went straight to number one in the UK Albums Chart with the single of the same name also reaching No.1 in the Indie Single Charts. The band's album missed out on the Nationwide Mercury Music Prize losing out to 'Elbow' , but won the Mojo Breakthrough Award. Throughout this period they were still working with their own bands.
