Pool Of Sound - Care

Ian and Paul

'Care' were formed by Huyton born Paul Simpson and Ian Broudie in 1983 in Liverpool following the split of 'The Wild Swans'. Paul Simpson, ex-keyboardist for 'Teardrop Explodes' and vocalist with 'The Wild Swans' came together with guitarist Ian Broudie, ex 'Big In Japan' and 'Original Mirrors'.
Signed up with Arista Records they released a string of singles under Broudie's production moniker 'Kingbird'. The duo's first single 'My Boyish Days' was released in June 1983 with a 'new wave' music style with keyboards and chiming guitars, and Simpson's dreamy, depressed croon.
The single 'Whatever Possessed You', which Simpson has said was originally written by him as a 'Wild Swans' song, was a mixture of 'Joy Division' and 'Echo & the Bunnymen'.

'Flaming Sword', their next release, was a top 50 single in the United Kingdom in 1983. Unfortunately Simpson, who was involved with a female musician contributing to the album, departed from 'Care' before they could complete the 'Love Crowns and Crucifies' LP. He and Ian were struggling to agree on their music style and the recorded tracks were shelved and the album never released.
The band consequently broke up after Simpson's departure and later in an interview he recalls, "'My time in 'Care' sounds like padded rooms and sedatives which is about right. I'd love to see a 'Care' retrospective as I have tons of fabulous unreleased 'Care' tapes at home but Ian Broudie and I fell out 15 years ago so don't hold your breath."

With the band developing surprisingly a cult following in Asia, together with a subsequent demand for their music on the internet, the singles were all released by Camden in 1997 on a compilation album entitled 'Diamonds And Emeralds' which also included the duo's B-sides, unfinished demos, and tracks intended for 'Love Crowns And Crucifies'. This meant that a lasting legacy of most of the work of Paul and Ian together would finally be available.
