Ambition v Prudence.
There have been a lot of fingers pointed and demonstrations to 'Save Our Club' outside Bury and Bolton. Claims that the FA should have done more for the likes of Bury may have an element of truth but where does the blame actually lie?
There are many clubs smaller than Bolton and Bury who are being managed correctly. So does part of the problem starts with over-spending? The fans who now just want the club to survive are the same fans who want success at some level. Who want better players brought in because most supporters out there want an owner to spend frivolously.
Bury seem to have lived beyond their means, that is the bottom line. If they had been assisted with more money would they not just have gone out and spent it?
Bolton have been guilty in the past of having an ambition that outweighed their income with their Chairman Phil Gartside being guilty of paying over-inflated fees to agents. The signing of 'star' players on little or no transfer fees but on high wages and good contracts meant that when things went wrong they could not shift playerson that were still on Premier League wages.
For many smaller clubs like Bolton gate receipts are a massive part of their income. As the old adage goes, without the fans the club is nothing. Everything is relative. It is wrong to complain about the likes of Manchester City and the their wage bill and transfer fees - they can afford it. £1k is too much money to pay if you haven't got it. Manchester City have in the past allowed Bury to use their old Carrington training ground rent-free saving them approx. £80k but Bury did not maintain it properly and it went into general disrepair.
