Mersey Beat - The Richmond Group
'The Poets' were a Blues band which was formed in 1964 and they played their first gig on the Cavern on the 6th of March 1965 and were given a follow up on the 17th March. At this point they were looking to change their name due to a Scottish band having already having recorded as 'The Poets'. They decided on 'The Richmond Group' and Bob Wooler came along to the Cavern to see them perform and wanted to manage them, through The Cavern.
As 'The Poets' their line up was, Arthur Alcock as vocalist, Barry David on lead guitar, Barry Wheldon on rhythm guitar, Howard Jones on bass guitar and Pete Taylor on drums.
Eddie Cave then joined as part vocalist/ sax when they became 'The Richmond Group' and Dave Kerrigan took on the main vocals.
They recorded 'Liverpool Today' on the 'Live at the Cavern' album together with 'Earl Preston's Realms' and Michael Allen. In the post-Beatles Liverpool era of 1963-64, they were among the more exciting stage acts. The group were mostly in their mid-teens and, apparently inspired by 'The Beatles', also wrote their own original material, principally from Dave Kerrigan, Eddie Cave, and Barry David. They also performed R&B like their lives depended on it, doing tense, lively renditions of Bo Diddley-style numbers with a certain aplomb.
Eddie Cave left at the Christmas of 1965 and joined 'The Fix', and with other changes in the line-up they disbanded in May 1966.
