Your Cheating Art
The intelligent analysis and humorous banter between Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville is sometimes more entertaining than the game itself. It was therefore somewhat deflating to hear Jamie state last night that "we all cheat", when discussing the penalty incident in the game between Swansea and Stoke City.
In February this year he had made a similar statement when Wayne Rooney had 'won' a penalty at Preston when he said "we are all cheats and hypocrites".
Gary Neville looked slightly embarrassed at Carragher's honesty and attempted to correct him by saying " I wouldn't say he cheated, I thought he was clever. I feel for Ashley Williams. Some people would say Bojan cheated, I would say it's clever play."
They then went on to both agree that it is something that the foreign players are better at, in using their body better when on the ball. They both said it was exactly what they would want a forward to do in their team. To further make the point, a similar incident with Jonjo Shelvey in the box was shown, and they said that he could have put his leg across the defender to 'win' a penalty but didn't. Not quite criticising, but the point was made.
Both these pundits have come from a 'win at all cost' environment and it shows. However cheating is cheating and cannot be condoned otherwise the game will change forever.
Do we want 'actors' on the field or footballers?
If a student manages to access information in an important exam situation and manages to 'dupe' the invigilators is he to be applauded or condemned? A case in point would be Charles Ingram who was clever on the 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' show but subsequently received a suspended prison sentence.
