He made his debut for Crewe at the age of 16 on the 19th of August 2010, against Cheltenham Town in a League 2 game when he came on as a second-half substitute for Clayton Donaldson, so becoming the second youngest player ever to appear for Crewe.
On the 20th of August 2011, after only being on the pitch for eight minutes, Nick was sent off for the first time in the 2–0 defeat to Shrewsbury Town following a poor challenge on Terry Gornell.
He scored his first senior goal in a 3–1 away win at AFC Wimbledon on the 15th of October 2011 and in January 2012 he was awarded the Football League's Young Player of the Month Award for December. On the 21st of April 2012 Nick won every award at Crewe's end of season awards ceremony, becoming the first player to win all five, including his 30 yard strike against Gillingham winning him 'Goal of the Season', Young Player of the Year and Player of the Year.
On 27 May 2012, Powell scored the most important goal of his career so far, a volley from outside the box into the top corner in the 2–0 victory over Cheltenham Town in the 2012 League 2 Play-Off Final at Wembley. Former Nantwich Town boss Steve Davis led Crewe Alexandra to promotion in front of 15,000 delirious fans to win Crewe promotion to League 1 as Nick Powell was voted Man of the Match for his performance that day.

At the end of the 2011–12 season, he finished as the club's top scorer
with a total of 15 goals in all competitions. This led to the
18-year-old being acclaimed as the best ever from the club's production
line and his eye-catching performance against Cheltenham saw the bids
flooding in. Club captain David Artell said of Nick, "He's the best
player I have ever played with. He can go right to the very top and all
of these Premier League teams are fully justified in watching him.We are
not a one-man team but there have been games this season when he has
done things which are out of this world."

He's a big game player. He's done that many times this season. For a lad of 18, it's a great start for him."

In the event the England youth international was transferred to
Manchester United on the 2nd of July 2012 in a 4 year deal said to worth up to £6
million.
